Police: Man dead after 9-hour Ritchie County standoff

PENNSBORO — One man is dead following a nine-hour standoff ending early Thursday morning in Pennsboro, West Virginia State Police said.

The incident started shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday when Ritchie County 911 received a call about shots fired during a domestic dispute on Buck Run Road in Pennsboro at the residence of Stephen D. Wilson and Tracy D. Wilson, according to a release from the State Police.

State Police and agencies from Ritchie, Doddridge, Pleasants, Wood and Wirt counties responded and found that the two victims, Tracy D. Wilson and Aaron K. Cottrill, had been maliciously assaulted by Stephen D. Wilson, the suspect in an altercation, State Police said. The confrontation resulted in the suspect having reportedly firing shots, one of which struck Cottrill in the hand, State Police said.

Tracy D. Wilson and Cottrill fled from the residence, State Police said. The suspect, Stephen D. Wilson, barricaded himself inside the residence, at which time the approximately nine-hour standoff ensued, State Police said.

“As negotiations continued to deteriorate with the suspect, the West Virginia State Police Special Response deployed a chemical agent in an attempt to force the suspect to exit the residence,” State Police said.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday, a single gunshot was heard from inside the residence, State Police said. The State Police Special Response Team entered the residence and found Wilson dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, State Police said.
