PARKERSBURG — A quartet of Little Kanawha Conference programs will attempt to punch their ticket to next week’s Class A state tournament in Charleston with victories tonight in co-regional final contests.

Gilmer County, which defeated Tyler Consolidated for seventh place in the LKC earlier this month, has the tough task of going on the road to take on No. 4 Tug Valley. The 12-2 Panthers are riding a seven-game win streak, which includes a 53-50 sectional championship win at No. 1 Man.

The Titans are 11-8 for head coach Jessy Moore and had won four in a row before getting upended by Wahama, 74-68 in overtime, during the sectional final. Wahama (7-11) now plays host to Man at 7 p.m. today while the Gilmer/TVHS matchup is the other half of Region IV.

“We haven’t really had 10 guys at practice in a while. A lot of them are playing baseball and other sports,” noted coach Moore, whose Titans are led in scoring by Josh Lipscomb (18 ppg), Ty Wellings (11 ppg) and Ean Hamric (11 ppg). “I mean it’s going well. The kids have worked hard. They are definitely battle tested.

“We’ve been through a lot this season. They are going to go in and give their best shot tomorrow. The (Caleb) May kid (26.5 ppg) is unbelievable. You take those other four guys on the court and put just about anybody else on the court and they are still one of the top teams in the state.”

In Region III, No. 7 Webster County (9-6) finished fourth place in the LKC and the Highlanders will take on No. 10 Greater Beckley Christian (8-7).

This will be the third game between the two programs. Webster County lost 75-70 at GBC on April 15 in overtime, but won a week earlier in Upper Glade, 71-59.

Tyler Consolidated and head coach Steven Nutter will take an 11-9 record into their showdown with No. 9 Cameron, which is 11-4 and winners of five straight including a 56-55 sectional overtime triumph versus Madonna, in a Region I co-final.

“We scrimmaged them early and in the scrimmage it was pretty even, but we never played them in the regular season,” noted coach Nutter, whose squad is led by Caleb Strode, Justin Bowman and Trey Landis.

Strode is averaging a double-double, putting up 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds an outing. Bowman is averaging 13 points and Landis 10.

“From the scrimmage to now, Cameron has improved immensely,” added the coach.

“They got a really good big (6-foot-7 Trevor Beresford) and all their guards, skill-wise, are much improved from the beginning of the year. It’s going to be a tough game going to the Dragon Dome for regionals. The mood has been good. We lost a heartbreaker (41-38 sectional final setback to Clay-Battelle) at the end of the game on Friday.

“Executed the game plan to perfection, did everything we asked, just came up a little short. The three practices since they’ve really gotten after it and have been disciplined and understand what we want them to do and they are motivated to win this game. I think it’s going to be a tight game if both teams come and play.”
