Employers in MOV rank on top 100 list
PARKERSBURG – Local businesses were ranked on the list of West Virginia’s 100 Largest Private Employers in a ranking done by Workforce West Virginia.
Camden Clark Medical Center and DuPont Washington Works were listed as part of the Top 100 Largest Private Employers in West Virginia for 2014.
The list contains businesses with single and multiple locations and ranks companies according to the number of employees, according to a press release from Workforce West Virginia. The data is extracted from the Quarterly Contributions Report for the first quarter of each year and is available to the public by the third quarter of each year.
West Virginia’s top four largest private employers are retail giant Wal-Mart, West Virginia United Health System, Charleston Area Medical Center and Kroger, unchanged from last year, the release said. Wal-Mart has remained the state’s top private employer since 1998.
Consolidated Coal Co., which held the fifth spot on the list for years, dropped off the list. Mylan Pharmaceuticals, which held the sixth spot last year, moved up to the fifth position.
The top 10 employers of March 2014 had a total of 369 more employees than the top employers of 2013, according to the press release.
Camden Clark Medical Center rose two spots to 14, making it the largest local private employer on the list while DuPont remained at 15.
Camden Clark has 1,858 employees with an annual salary and benefit budget of $92.7 million.
“It’s not surprising that health care jobs continue to be an important part of the state’s economy as indicated by this year’s top 100 employers list,” said Tim Brunicardi, director of marketing and public affairs for Camden Clark. ”Health care offers a variety of employment advantages such as continued job growth, the ability to have a meaningful career by touching lives on a daily basis, jobs available for all educational and experience levels, and competitive earning potential.
”In short, the health care industry provides career opportunities that are not only financially rewarding but personally rewarding as well,” he said.
Hospital officials have said their employees are regularly involved with civic, service and other organizations throughout the community in addition to their work caring for the community’s health care needs.
”Perhaps more important than the quantity of people we employ is the quality of the people we employ,” Brunicardi said. ”We’re proud of being among the state’s leading employers but we’re equally proud of the compassionate, dedicated staff of professionals who serve this community each and every day.”
DuPont Washington Works and the Belle site near Charleston employ about 2,150 people in West Virginia, down about 50 from the previous year. DuPont continues to be a world leader in the production of automotive, industrial and consumer goods.
In June, DuPont finalized the sale of the Glass Laminating Solutions/Vinyl section (Butacite) to Kuraray Vinyl Acetate Co. which included the transfer of about 50 employees at Washington Works.
“As we move through this time of changing technology and corporate focus, we are proud of how our employees are demonstrating their ability to adapt, respond and deliver to meet the needs of our internal and external customers,” Plant Manager Karl Boelter said. “The coming months will be dynamic and we’re well-positioned for a successful future.”
In 2013, DuPont announced it would spin off its Performance Chemicals segment into a separate publicly held company and that transaction is expected in mid-2015.
The list of the Top 100 Private Employers was prepared from information provided by employers covered under the unemployment compensation insurance system, through the federal/state Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages Program conducted in West Virginia by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, and the Research, Information and Analysis Division of WorkForce West Virginia.
As natural gas drilling increases around the state, energy companies have entered the list as well as other types of businesses.
Among the new additions to this year’s list, Murray American Energy (6th), URS Energy and Construction (30th), American Public University System Inc. (83rd), Maxxim Shared Services (87th), Wendy’s International Inc. (with locations throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley) (92nd) and Westbrook Health Services (based in Parkersburg) (100th).
Wal-Mart and Kroger have stores throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley, which contributed to the two companies’ overall ranking in the state. United Bank, which is based in Parkersburg, was 45th on the list. Constellium Rolled Products Ravenswood was 46th. Simonton Building Products in Ritchie County ranked 55th on the list.
Highmark West Virginia Inc., which is headquartered in Parkersburg, came in at 68th. Manpower Temporary Services, which has an office in Parkersburg, was 85th.
