Braxton County 42,
Roane County 0
SUTTON — Braxton County cruised to a 42-0 victory over Roane County Friday night.
The Eagles scored 22 quick points in the first quarter, the first on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jett Cogar to Baine Cogar. Justin Paletti rushed for a 6-yard score and then Tyler Cox hauled in a 66-yard TD bomb from Jett Cogar to give the hosts a comfortable lead.
Jett Cogar threw his third TD pass of the game with 11:00 to go in the second period, a 41-yard strike to Cox to make it 28-0. His fourth scoring pass came with 4:27 reamining in the first half, finding Baine Cogar from 12 yards out to extend the lead to 34-0.
Baine Cogar wrapped up the scoring with a 6-yard TD run at the 11:19 mark in the third period.
Jett Cogar finished 9 for 11 for 202 yards and four TDs. Cox was top target, catching three passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
Roane was led offensively by Austin Hawkins, who rushed for 40 yards and passed for 20 yards. Claude Bauer added 43 yards on seven carries. The Raiders lost three fumbles in the game and threw an interception for four total turnovers.
Doddridge County 9, Ritchie County 8
ELLENBORO — DJ Devinney hasn’t been needed for much kicking outside of extra points and punts during his four-year stay at Doddridge County High. Yet, Friday night, when his name was called with the game on the line he came through in a big way.
Devinney’s 26-yard field goal with 1:22 left in the game sent the Bulldogs to a dramatic 9-8 win over host Ritchie County in the I-77 Rivalry game.
“His third field goal of the year was clutch,” Doddridge County head coach Bobby Burnside said.
In the lowest scoring game Doddridge County had played in two years, the victory and boot kept their regular-season winning streak in tact. Now the mark stands at 32 contests.
For Ritchie County, it was the second hard-to-swallow loss in as many weeks. The Rebels came into the game off a 34-28 setback at St. Marys. It seemed they would put that one behind them after Ethan Haught found Blaine Bowier with 9:21 left in the third quarter. Doddridge hadn’t found the end zone since a 69-yard pass from Jared Jones to Hunter Jenkins in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs usually aggressive running game wasn’t quite churning out the yardage.
However, the Bulldogs managed to get in position for Devinney’s kick. Dave “Bear” Burnside’s defense then kept the Rebels off the board as time ran off the clock. On the night, his unit held the Rebels’ offense to 166 total yards.
Doddridge improved to 4-0 on the season. Ritchie fell to 2-2.
St. Marys 60,
Calhoun County 8
ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Blue Devils kept their undefeated season going strong on Friday night, as they toppled visiting Calhoun County, 60-8. Putting 34 points up in the first quarter did the trick, as Tre Moss and Ben Long scored twice in the frame to start the rout. QB Brennan Boron also found Cyle West for a passing touchdown to get himself in the scoring summary. A total of 20 more SMHS points (including a 100-yard pick-six from Logan Rice) gave the team a 54-0 lead over Calhoun (0-4) at the break. The Red Devils got on the board with a Grant Sterns 8-yard run to end the third, but that was all.
St. Marys (4-0) has a pivotal 7 p.m. LKC battle on the horizon at rival Williamstown on Friday, while Calhoun County looks for its first win of the year on Friday at 7 p.m. when Clay-Battelle comes to town.
Wirt County 40,
Tyler Consolidated 18
KIDWELL — Despite 13 penalties for 123 yards, Wirt County continued its high power offensive display one week after putting up 76 points in a win over Webster County.
This time, Jason Hickman’s Tigers raced out to a 21-0 lead en route to a 40-18 road victory over Tyler Consolidated.
Garrett Parrsons found the end zone three times, Kolton Parsons found the end zone twice and the Tigers racked up 423 total yards of offense. The Tigers were especially effective on the ground where they kept the clock moving with 39 rushes for 283 stripes.
The host Silver Knights couldn’t keep up. Ryan Walton’s team managed just 279 total yards of offense including a 68-yard night on the ground. Ty Walton, Justin Bowman and Caleb Strode all scored touchdowns for the Knights. When they weren’t scoring, it seemed like they were turning the ball over. Tyler coughed up the ball three times, but it could have been worse as they put the ball on the ground a total of four times.
The win surely was a big boost for the Tigers as Doddridge County comes to town for a big matchup next week in Elizabeth. Tyler, meanwhile, takes next week off before a trip to Buffalo on Oct. 9.
Summers County 27, Ravenswood 7
RAVENSWOOD — The Summers County Bobcats picked up their third win of the season, dropping the hosting Red Devils 27-7 on Friday night.
The Bobcats controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the entire night, picking up 281 rushing yards and having four players rushing for more than 40 yards. Markis Crawford had a game-high in both carries (16) and yards (98), while Willie Dodson had 11 carries, 79 yards and one touchdown. Also reaching paydirt was Andre-Merriam Harshaw (44 yards) and Keandre Sarver (18 yards). In addition to 44 rushing yards, Logan Fox had a 12-yard touchdown pass to Sarver in the Bobcats’ only completion of the night.
Dropping to 0-4 now on the season, Red Devil running back Isaiah Casto had a team-high 119 rushing yards on 20 carries and a TD. Casto was also the team’s leading receiver with three catches and 36 yards.
