PARKERSBURG — A transformative two-day training on advocacy and community engagement will be Feb. 6-7 at the Blennerhassett Hotel in Parkersburg.
The training event is designed for individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, and advocates. The session will provide essential tools to amplify voices, build confidence, and create lasting change.
Participants will gain practical skills to address key issues, focusing on building community belonging, combating social devaluation, and understanding the power of valued social roles. Attendees will also learn strategies to enhance advocacy efforts and leadership skills within their communities.
“Community inclusion and a sense of belonging are vital for people with developmental disabilities, as they create a foundation of support, understanding, and shared experiences. These relationships not only foster personal growth, but they also build a stronger, more inclusive society where everyone can contribute to advancing policies that reflect the diverse needs of all its members,” said Katie Arbaugh, Program Operations Coordinator from the WV Developmental Disabilities Council which is sponsoring the event.
“The goal of this training is to strengthen relationships and shared experiences while integrating advocacy and leadership strategies, enabling the community to actively support and advance advocacy efforts that benefit everyone, including individuals with developmental disabilities,” Arbaugh said.
