Resist the devil
It is very disheartening to see all the problems in our country today. Surely people that are made in the image of God should be able to resolve their differences without afflicting so much pain on everyone. I had a brother in the Lord tell me many years ago that the farther people get away from the Lord, the less value is put on human life. I can’t help but to wonder — have we as a country forgotten our Creator? Have we lost sight of God’s design for honoring, loving and treating one another with respect? In the days of Isaiah the people were so spiritually dead that he said, “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken. I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.” Later he would say, “Woe unto them that call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for light and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” (Isaiah 5:20) This was a very strong indictment against a people that had forsaken their Creator.
God’s word is a source of information that not only shows the sin of people but also gives a solution to sin. That solution was put in place 2,000+ years ago when Christ, who was God in the flesh, came to earth to seek and save that which is lost. When we are willing to repent and put our faith in Christ’s death, burial and resurrection, we can be spiritually awakened. Christ himself referred to this as being born again or born of the spirit. People that are spiritually alive ought to value God’s Word and strive to follow Christ scripturally.
I believe what we see happening today in America is a spiritual problem. Spiritually dead people will carry out the devil’s agenda and not even know they are doing it. I believe that James 4:7-8a was good advice for that day and is good for what we see going on in America today. It says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw night o you.” Resist is a key word for defeating the devil, and I believe it is a key word to stop the senseless killing and chaos we see going on today in the cities and streets of America.
How many would agree that if people, regardless of their color, would stop resisting arrest when confronted by law officers, could this not drastically reduce the senseless killings we see happening? Romans 13 gives God’s design for those that are put in positions of authority and also for those that are under this authority. It says, For there is no power but God: Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. For he is the minister of God to thee for good.
Failure to resist the devil while resisting the powers ordained of God is a sure recipe for problems. During these perilous times may I encourage us all to draw nigh unto God through humility, prayer and the study of His word. Lord have mercy on our country and forgive us of our sins. Amen.
