Time to join new movement
I give thanks to God for the lives of Rep. John Lewis and the Rev. C.T. Vivian, two iconic civil rights leaders who were at the forefront of the movement as young men and continued encouraging the next generation made up of different ethnicities, cultures and religions until the last days of their lives.
After the senseless killing of Black Americans, they witnessed corporate America, sports franchises and other entities put pressure on our society to do the right thing. They witnessed, as we all are, the death throes of those in our society who are trying desperately to keep things the way they’ve always been.
I met Dr. Vivian at my home church 20 some years ago and remember him citing the prophet Amos running up and down those old streets of Israel shouting “these people just don’t know how to do right.” I think the old prophet would now say we’re finally beginning to get it right. One of my favorites quotes from Rep. Lewis is “We may have come over on different ships, but we’re all in the same boat now.”
This new generation understands that and has made it a part of the new movement of change.
In the words of the late great Sam Cook, “It’s been a long time coming, but a change is gonna’ come, oh yes it will.” And in the words of God “Behold, I am doing a new thing. Don’t you perceive it?”
I encourage all people to join in the movement, but especially you church folks. You’ve been sitting comfortably in the pews for too long. It’s time to get up off your blessed assurances and get actively involved in this new movement.
Continue the legacy of Rep. Lewis and the Rev. Vivian.
