Letter to the Editor: Bridge the gap

A unique opportunity exists for creating an iconic destination for the MOV by installing a miniature single lane classic covered bridge over a small stream called Pond Run.
Help is needed from the Army, CSX and Congressional leaders in order to complete the bicycle river trail from Parkersburg’s Point Park to the eateries and stores in Vienna and beyond.
Completing a family friendly and safe biking trail along the Ohio River with a one-of-a-kind covered bridge over Pond Run is a simple, innovative way to build an attractive destination for biking in our region. (Bike for a Bite!)
The Army’s Corps of Engineers, with their assets and expertise, can easily span this stream with a temporary, “Bailey” type bridge to be followed by a safe permanent structure, possibly an attractive barn-like covered bridge.
CSX help is needed for a pedestrian grade crossing and to complete Wood County’s share of a national network of trails called the “Industrial Heartlands Trail Coalition” by filling a gap from Ritchie County to the Ohio border via Williamstown to merge with Marietta’s extensive system of trails.
Congressional influence can help by communicating needs to the Army and CSX.
With both Senator Capito and Representative Moore seeking re-election, it is time for them to, “Walk Their Talk,” by actually doing something to promote economic activity and growth in West Virginia!
Naturally, for security, the bridge would be robust enough to support a patrol car and feature a motion activated security camera along with encouragement to leave one’s mark when crossing the bridge.
It is possible to prefabricate a small covered bridge off-site using local assets if made on a reinforced house trailer chassis, easily wheeled to a crossing.
With a trail linking Parkersburg to Vienna, the popular half marathon could be greatly simplified by avoiding hassles with city roads and crossings. And, once completed, a biking event could be combined with the half marathon. PKB to Cairo, riding thru scenic “Almost Heaven.”
My goal is to create a happy symbol for attracting customers and hopefully, to reverse a somber trend of empty stores, parking spaces and vacant lots.
The possibilities for a smooth paved bicycle trail are limited only by one’s imagination and the willingness for others to help!
