ELIZABETH — Three people died in a Wednesday morning house fire in Wirt County, Wood County 911 Director Mike Shook said. At 9:03 a.m., the Elizabeth-Wirt Volunteer Fire Department was called out for a structure fire at 200 Whited Road. The Wood County 911 Center handles dispatching for Wirt County. Upon arrival, fire crews found “heavy fire conditions throughout the residence,” said Elizabeth-Wirt Fire Chief Stephen Settle. An individual was standing outside the residence awaiting EMS arrival, he added. That person was taken to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Memorial Hospital to be treated. Shook said multiple agencies were on the scene with the department, including the Wirt County Sheriff’s Office, Wirt County EMS, Camden Clark Ambulance, the West Virginia State Police, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and others. Settle said East Wood and Grantsville Volunteer Fire Departments also responded to assist. The Elizabeth Fire Department sent 10 firefighters, East Wood had seven and Grantsville sent two. Two engines, two tankers and two utility vehicles also responded. Settle said the fire was under control within 40 minutes and was out by Wednesday afternoon. Water had to be shuttled to the site from a mile away, the chief added. The Wirt County Sheriff’s Department and the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating at the scene. The names of the victims have not been released. Settle said further details would be released by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
