Sock collection surpasses goal

VIENNA — Many people take for granted having warm socks to wear in the winter.

But Jon Six knows that not everyone is so fortunate to have a pair of warm socks.

Six, owner of Jon Six Hair Company in Vienna, is leading a drive this month to collect socks for homeless people. The sock collection continues until his hair salon closes at 3 p.m. Saturday.

He has seen that some people needed socks, and Six had heard that the Latrobe Street Mission in Parkersburg wanted socks to give to people staying at the shelter.

Six started with a goal of collecting 300 socks, then 600 socks. As of Wednesday, 2,100 pairs of socks have been donated.

The request for socks was spread by friends and on Facebook.

From two pairs of socks to 100 pairs of socks have arrived at Jon Six Hair Company.

Children and families have been involved in the project.

“It has been an amazing turnout,” he said. Some socks were shipped here from Washington, D.C.

Six appreciates all the support others have given to help the homeless this winter.

He believes at least five nonprofit agencies will benefit from the socks. Any nonprofit needing socks can contact him at his business, 1509 Grand Central Ave., Suite 2, Vienna.

When Janey Ott, a teacher at Parkersburg High School, learned of Six’s project, she wanted to help.

Students in her Community Integrated Work Program plan to help sort and wrap socks today. Ott said this is a way for the students to help the community.

Six has led drives in the past to help others, whether it is food, blankets for animals or socks for the homeless.

This is the first time he has attempted a sock drive.

Starting at $3.70/week.
