Inspiring: Huffman’s work making a difference

Sometimes it is the legislation that seems smaller — perhaps grabs fewer headlines — that can make the biggest difference for individuals. That is the case for state House Bill 4089, which recently became law in West Virginia after legislators finally supported it during this winter’s session.

Also called Jessica Huffman’s Law, the effort was inspired by Huffman’s own experience while receiving chemotherapy treatments a couple of years ago, according to Wrap Up, the West Virginia Legislature’s official blog. Though Huffman was unprepared by the loss of her own hair after a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, she didn’t let that stop her from jumping into action to help others.

“When I went out in public, and I had lost all my hair, I looked sick even though I felt really normal,” Huffman explained to the Senate Health Committee during the session. “That was a topic of conversation or look of pity from people, and that really bothered me a lot.”

But at the time, health insurance in the Mountain State was not required to pay for scalp cooling systems that can prevent or reduce hair loss in cancer patients, according to Wrap Up.

HB 4089 changed that, making West Virginia just the third state in the country to enact such a law. Similar legislation has since been introduced in Ohio.

While insurance companies have until Jan. 1, 2027, to officially make the required changes to their coverage, the effort is sure to bring hope to many facing a difficult challenge.

Huffman, a Mid-Ohio Valley resident and vice president of system nursing strategies for WVU Medicine, deserves enormous credit for using her experience as a cancer survivor to better serve others. Last year, she spearheaded Jessica Huffman’s Women’s Cancer Fund at the Marietta Community Foundation, which helps women with the expense of wigs and other items that become necessary because of cancer treatment.

Her work is proof that one very determined person can be spurred by adversity to create a big change. Here’s hoping it becomes an inspiration for more of the same.
