PARKERSBURG -- Despite all the challenges of the 2020 season, the Parkersburg girls soccer team of then first-year head coach Brad Morris more than held their own.
A final record of 8-7-1 was produced, which included a 1-0 sectional setback to rival Parkersburg South, and now the red and white are set to open the campaign with a 5 p.m. varsity start (3 p.m. JV) Saturday inside Stadium Field versus Buckhannon-Upshur.
With a roster featuring nearly 30 players, coach Morris with assistants Justus Robinson and Courtney Caudill will be greatly aided by the return of a dozen letterwinners.
Leading the charge up front are senior forwards Kendal Domenick and Jade Poling along with junior Jenna Carpenter.
Hailee Merritt returns for her senior season at keeper.
Two other seniors -- midfielder Audrey Campbell and defender Emma Fleming -- are back after lettering a year ago.
Junior letterwinners set for varsity action include a trio of midfielders in Payton Harvey, Lauren McDonnell and Annie Mildren.
The only other returning 11th-grader who lettered is defender Paige Rogers.
A pair of sophomores -- midfielder Olivia Ashley and defender Addison Warman -- also letterd as ninth-graders.
Not only do the Big Reds also have another senior goalie in Isabel Lynch, but classmate Jacqualin Leaman will be back on defense following an injury. The other full-time varsity player is senior forward Brenna Barrows.
Going into the opener, PHS also is expected to carry five players on the junior varsity/varsity roster with seniors Maya Saxton (F), Hannah Hopkins (D), junior Morgan McHugh (MF) and a pair of freshmen in Jadyn Colgrove (D) and Margaret Mildren (F).
