Chick Crites Food Drive this Saturday in downtown Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG - The annual Chick Crites Food Drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of The Parkersburg News and Sentinel at 519 Juliana St. in downtown Parkersburg.

This will mark the seventh annual Chick Crites Annual Food Drive, benefiting Old Man Rivers Mission and Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 32 equally. The drive is hosted by Parkersburg News and Sentinel with the Mid-Ohio Valley Platoon Marine Corps Veterans Association.

The food drive was named in honor of Carl "Chick" Crites, a Marine Corps and Vietnam War veteran, who passed away in 2020. Crites was known to support other veterans as a member of Old Man Rivers Mission and DAV Chapter 32 and this drive continues his legacy.

"What we hope for is a community outpouring of support, with donations of canned goods, nonperishable food items, hygiene products, pet supplies or financial donations," said Christina Myer, executive editor of The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.

Myer said Parkersburg News and Sentinel has traditionally looked for new ways to engage with and help the community, and when Bernie Lyons approached with the idea of a food drive, it was a great opportunity, along with a food drive in Marietta that is held in Sept.

“Food insecurity has only grown since then, and while it would be nice to think we don't need this anymore, that’s just not the case,” Myers said, "It doesn't matter how much you can bring, every donation helps.”
