SPRING VALLEY -- Spring Valley got back to its familiar style of play in the second half and knocked off Parkersburg 28-13 Friday night at Timberwolf Stadium.
The Timberwolves scored twice on time-consuming drives in the second half and played a stifling defense as they dominated the line of scrimmage.
Between the third and fourth periods, Spring Valley ran 10 plays, all runs, and got a 4-yard touchdown run by Ethyn Washington. Parkersburg got the ball once in the quarter and gained 3 yards.
In the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves drove 57 yards, again all on runs, and Washington got the score on a 1-yard run on fourth down.
Colton Mathis led the powerful ground game for Spring Valley (1-1) with 162 yards on 24 carries. On Parkersburg's final drive, Mathis intercepted a fourth-down pass. The Timberwolves then ran out the clock.
The Timberwolves got output on the ground from Jake Van Arsdale and Washington. Washington ran for 61 yards in the second half.
Next Friday, the Timberwolves take on Huntington High at Marshall's Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
The Timberwolves had seven fumbles and recovered four of them.
The Big Reds have their home opener against Hurricane next Friday.
It was two different halves as Spring Valley opened a 14-0 lead into the second period only to see the Big Reds come alive on offense, scoring twice to cut the lead to 14-13 at the break. They got the two scores in the final four minutes of the half.
Spring Valley struck first and went 60 yards in 10 plays for the first score on an 11-yard run by Gabe Chambers with 56 seconds on the clock. Mathis helped out with a 44-yard run.
In the second period, teams traded turnovers early, an interception by Alex Greer followed by a Lovejoy fumble. Then Mathis capped a scoring march with a 4-yard run.
Parkersburg's offense got two scores late in the second period. Greer started the first with a 28-yard dash on first down to the 27. He capped the drive on a 3-yard keeper.
Mathis had a big run to start the next drive for the home team, but he fumbled the ball away. On first down, Greer hooked up with Brady Thorn for a 47-yard TD pass. The PAT failed.
Spring Valley fumbled and threw a pick in the first half.
Mathis ran for 126 yards in the first half. Greer led the Big Reds in rushing in the first half.
