* If becoming a special effects make-up artist is in the cards someday, one Parkersburg teen is off to a fantastic start. Tobi Cox, 14, won first place in the runway division, in the cosplay contest at Tsubasacon in Charleston earlier this month. This time, Cox was cosplaying as Carl from "The Walking Dead," but also won the junior division in a contest in March at Toy Expo at the Parkersburg Art Center as creepypasta character BEN Drowned. Cox expressed surprise at having won with Carl cosplay that incorporated the character's missing left eye. It sounds, however, as though Cox's skill is great enough that winning such contests will soon become routine. Well done!
* SIPS Coffee owner Jen Allman received an invitation she almost ignored (believing it wasn't real) from a representative of the Pittsburgh Steelers who wanted her to bring her business's coffee truck to serve fans outside a game. Because of the opportunity to serve customers just outside Acrisure Stadium, Allman was able to raise donations to support the Camden Clark Foundation's Pink Mammogram Fund. (Her fundraising goal this year is $6,000). She also used the attention as an opportunity to remind people how important it is to get screened for breast cancer, after her own diagnoses. Now cancer-free and participating in a clinical trial, Allman's message is reaching ever-wider audiences. "I've had customers tell me that because of things that I've posted or said, they have gotten a mammogram," Allman said. With her energy drawing the attention of the Steelers, that reach is sure to grow. Here's to many more such opportunities!
