Three charged with fraudulent returns activity at Walmart
VIENNA — Three people are in the regional jail on charges they returned fraudulently obtained merchandize for cash at Walmart in Vienna.
Officers from the Vienna Police Department were at Walmart on another issue at 2 p.m. Wednesday when they were alerted by store loss prevention officers of possible fraudulent activity by a group of individuals, Chief Mike Pifer said.
A description of the suspects was given to police, who then relayed the information to other officers, according to Pifer.
The suspects allegedly used illegally obtained credit card information to purchase gift cards and merchandise, then return the merchandise for money, Pifer said.
Shortly thereafter, police detained Roman East, 20, of Raleigh, N.C., Jermel Williams, 25, of Suffolk, Va., and Amelia Valencia, 20, of Angier, N.C., in the parking lot at Walmart. As a result of their investigation, officers arrested East and Williams for fraudulent use of an access device and Valencia for accessory to fraudulent use of an access device, Pifer said.
The charges are felonies. If convicted, each defendant faces a possible fine of up to $10,000 or imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both.
The three were staying in the Red Roof Inn at 3714 East Seventh Street in Parkersburg where police officers obtained a search warrant and obtained additional evidence, Pifer said.
They were arraigned before Wood County Magistrate Jodi Purkey and remanded to the regional jail in lieu of $25,000 bond each.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges and arrests are pending, Pifer said.
