ATHENS — A father and his 11-year-old son were killed Tuesday night when a tree fell onto their vehicle, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said on Wednesday.

Clifford L. Tyler III, 41, and his son Clifford L. Tyler IV, 11, were about a mile away from home near Rainbow on Old U.S. 33, also known as County Road 33A, when the tree for an unknown reason fell and crushed their 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, the patrol said.

The single-vehicle accident happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. Both were in the front seat of the vehicle, the patrol said.

They were pronounced dead at the scene by the Athens County coroner, the patrol said. Responding were Athens County Emergency Medical Services, the Richland Area Volunteer Fire Department, Athens City Police, the Highway Patrol and the coroner.
