Marietta man faces kidnapping, domestic violence charges
MARIETTA — A Marietta man was arrested Wednesday on charges involving alleged domestic violence and kidnapping.
Jonathan David Harshberger, 31, of Marietta, was placed under arrest at his home on Wednesday, for the charges of kidnapping a first degree felony, two counts domestic violence and disrupting public service. Harshberger was transported to the Washington County Jail.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that on Wednesday morning, a woman reported that on Tuesday night, her live-in boyfriend harmed her and one of her children after she asked him to stay home that night instead of going out with his friends.
She told deputies after she asked Harshberger to stay home, he became angry and violent, hitting the wall and throwing a chair. When the woman tried to leave the home with her children, Harshberger shoved her against a wall and began choking her.
According to the report, she tried to escape his grasp, but struck her head on the wall by the door, which is when Harshberger then threw her onto a couch, where he tried to punch her and choked her again.
After that fight, the woman called 911 and her father for help, but Harshberger took her phone and threatened to kill her if anyone showed up at their home. Harshberger forced his girlfriend to tell 911 operators, and her father, that her child had accidentally dialed 911, and that no one should come to the home.
When one of the woman’s children began crying, Harshberger hit the child on the leg so hard it caused a bruise. She told deputies she then tried to leave with her children three more times, but Harshberger physically restrained her each time, and told her she would not leave the house that night.
After that, the woman took her children to the basement to put them to bed. Eventually, Harshberger left the home, and the woman was able to escape with her children. She took her children to her parents home, then drove to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to report what happened.
