BELPRE — Belpre City Schools has several activities planned over the next week or so as the 2016-2017 school year comes to an end.

At its final meeting of the school year, the Belpre City Schools Board of Education met Monday evening to discuss final plans for the end of the year and the start of the new year in August.

The main event will be the 2017 Belpre High School Graduation Ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Belpre High School gymnasium. Approximately 77 seniors are expected to be eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony.

Prior to graduation, Belpre High School will hold its annual Awards Day at 8 a.m. Friday. Next Wednesday, May 24, is the final day for students in the Belpre School District.

During Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Tony Dunn recognized the teachers and students involved in the Young Entrepreneur Club at Belpre High School for their efforts and accomplishments during past school year, including receiving top marks at a spring competition at Ohio State University.

The school board approved extended time for a number of Belpre Elementary and Belpre High teachers summer programs and work. The district’s summer programs include Jumpstart to Kindergarten on Monday through Thursday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. June 26 to July 20; Elementary Summer School (for K-4) on Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 5 to June 28; and High School Credit Recovery from 1-3 p.m. June 1-June 23.

“The students go home for the summer but school never really closes, especially the elementary school,” Dunn said.

In preparation for the 2017-2018 school year, the board approved lunch and breakfast prices for K-12 for: $1.50 for student breakfast including milk; $2.85 for high school student lunch including milk; $2.75 for elementary school lunch including milk; $2.50 for adult breakfast including milk; and $3.25 for adult lunch including milk.

District Treasurer Lance Erlwein said the new costs represent a 10 cent increase over current prices based on state requirements. Dunn said about 60 percent of students in the Belpre district qualify for free and reduced meals.

Board president Fred Meredith said the school board’s June meeting will change day and location. The meeting will be 7 p.m. June 22, a Thursday, at Belpre Elementary School instead of the Stone Administration Building.
