Hoops roundup: Doddridge boys power past Ritchie, 62-48

WEST UNION — Doddridge County outscored visiting Ritchie County 18-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 62-48 victory Friday.

The Bulldogs (9-1) led 30-24 at halftime, but the Rebels (5-3) got within four, 44-40, by the end of the third before DCHS was able to take control.

Doddridge, ranked fourth in Class AA, got a game-high 16 points from Jaden Solomon. Jerod Trent added 13 while Landon Thomas chipped in seven for the Bulldogs, who visit St. Marys on Tuesday.

The Class A No. 7 Rebels were led by Isaac Hodges’ 15 points. He was one of four RCHS players to finish in double figures — Seth Cronin tallied 11 while Jenner Keen and Turner Shriver netted 10 apiece.

Wirt County 69, Webster County 59

ELIZABETH — Knotted up at 47-all after three quarters of play Friday night, Wirt County outscored visiting Webster County 22-12 over the final eight minutes to claim a 69-59 triumph.

The Tigers (6-2) got the bulk of their scoring from Braylan Dawson and Tyler Smith. Dawson knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 27 points. Smith added 22 points for WCHS, which travels to Roane County on Wednesday.

Easton Wyer pitched in seven points for the Tigers, who led 18-12 after one but fell behind 30-28 by halftime.

Joston Lewis paced the Highlanders (4-4) with 20 points while Kasey Farmer was close behind at 19.

Clay County 75, Gilmer County 68

CLAY — Kolten Holbert put together a monster individual performance, but his team fell short as Gilmer County dropped a 75-68 decision to Clay County Friday.

Holbert finished with a game-high 36 points. He went 10 for 12 at the free-throw line and nailed a pair of 3-pointers for the Titans, who dropped to 2-6 and play host to Braxton County on Monday. Jacob Mick added 10 points for GCHS while Tyler Ratliff fell just shy of double figures with nine.

Gilmer got behind 38-25 at halftime but rallied to get within one, 50-49, by the start of the fourth quarter. The Titans outscored the hosts 24-12 in the third, but watched CCHS go on a 25-19 run to close the game.

Clay got 26 points from Joey Elliott, 21 from Michael Foster and 12 from Spencer Faulkner.

Ripley 88, Lincoln County 42

RIPLEY — Ripley splashed 14 3-pointers, including five from Creed Waskey, in an 88-42 rout of visiting Lincoln County Friday.

The Vikings (7-2) got a team-high 18 points from Parker Smith, but he was just one of five RHS players to score in double figures. Waskey added 15, Kyler Doss netted 11 and Caleb Parsons and Blake Justice tallied 10 apiece. Matthew Stellato was one point shy of double digits at nine.

Cooper Eastman grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Ripley, which led 23-14 after one, 47-22 at halftime and 77-31 going into the fourth. Stellato and Doss tallied seven and six assists, respectively, while Brady McVay notched a game-high four steals.

LCHS was paced by Hayden Davis’ 12 points.

GIRLS

Gilmer 48, Wirt 28

GLENVILLE — Class A No. 1 Gilmer County remained unbeaten Friday night with a 48-28 win over No. 9 Wirt County.

The Titans, now 5-0, played lockdown defense out of the gate and held the Tigers to two first-quarter points. GCHS, which plays host to Webster County Tuesday, led 12-2 after one, 23-10 at halftime and 32-21 going into the fourth.

Ava Dobbins was a force inside for the Titans, racking up a game-high 21 points. Erin Stoddard and Lena Frymeier added eight points apiece.

Wirt, which dropped to 4-5 and welcomes Eastern on Tuesday, was led by Breigyn Dawson’s nine points.
