Hoops roundup: Doddridge beats adversity, South Harrison

WEST UNION — The Bulldogs overcame illness, injuries, poor free-throw shooting and sloppy play Friday in a win over the Hawks in the opening round of the Dan McConnell Hoops Classic in West Union.

Doddridge County entered the contest with Landon Thomas on the bench battling an apparent case of food poisoning and lost center Jaden Solomon to injury in the first quarter, while also seeing starters Jerod Trent and Heston Hayes, along with Malachi Kelley hobbled and Maddox Jones forced from the game by a cut knee.

The Bulldogs responded with Josh Dehaven and Thomas scoring 12 points each, while the defense forced South Harrison into 16 turnovers.

Trent hit a pair of 3-pointer and added a basket in transition to put Doddridge County up early before the defense took over in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs limited the Hawks to seven points in that span and gave up just one basket from the floor on an offensive putback, while pumping in 14 points to build a 13-point advantage.

Dehaven finished with eight rebounds, while Thomas came off the bench to produce five rebounds, three blocks and two steals to go with their 12 points apiece.

Graham Saas led SHHS with 11 points, while Adam Marple added 10 points.

Doddridge County advances to meet Sissonville, a 61-60 victor over Frankfort in the opener, in the championship at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, while South Harrison and the Falcons kick things off in the consolation at 6 p.m.
