Prep football playoff roundup: Doddridge advances, others ousted

WEST UNION — Six different players scored touchdowns as Doddridge County opened the 2025 postseason with a bang, routing visiting Logan 52-7 Friday night.

The Bulldogs (11-0) will visit Independence next week in the Class AA quarterfinals.

Heston Hayes kicked things off Friday with a 2-yard pick-six to get the scoring started. That was the first of five interceptions thrown by Logan on the night.

Lyric Blake (31-yard run), Brandon Davis (11-yard pass from Brysen Dixon) and Brycen Eidel (8-yard run) all found the end zone to put DCHS up 26-0.

Logan’s only score came via a Cadon Justice 66-yard scamper with 4:50 to go in the second, but Doddridge answered right back on a Caleb Hall 1-yard scoring run, making it 32-7 at halftime.

Hall found the end zone again in the third, again from a yard out, Landon Thomas caught a 23-yard scoring strike from Dixon and Blake ran in from 12 yards out to round out the scoring plays.

Justice finished with 127 yards on 14 carries to lead all rushers.

Doddridge was led by Hall, who carried 14 times for 78 yards. Dixon went 6 for 8 for 119 yards through the air.

University 62, Parkersburg 14

MORGANTOWN — University churned out 558 total yards of offense en route to a 62-14 opening round playoff win over Parkersburg Friday.

Alex Greer ran for a 9-yard touchdown and threw a 31-yard TD pass to Ethan Jones in the second quarter, getting the Big Reds (5-6) within six, 20-14, but UHS closed the game on a 42-0 run.

The Hawks saw Jaedyn Katchur rush nine times for 109 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way. Harrison Helbig passed for 299 yards and three touchdowns — two to Hayden George and one to Glenn Brown. Helbig also rushed for two TDs, and Kaleil Lewis had a 34-yard pick-six late in the third to round out the scoring.

George led all receivers with seven catches for 154 yards.

Greer led PHS on the ground with 40 yards on 14 carries. He was 3 for 14 passing for 73 yards and a TD. He was intercepted thrice.

Clay County 44, Roane County 12

SPENCER — It was a reversal of fortunes here Friday night for No. 11 Clay County and head coach Jason Nichols as the Panthers stunned No. 6 Roane County, 44-12, and advanced to next week’s Class AA state quarterfinals.

In week three of the regular season, the Raiders knocked off the Panthers 49-14 at County Stadium.

However, Roane County’s defense watched Cooper Collins complete 8 of 14 attempts for 341 yards and four touchdowns as Joel Elliott grabbed six of those aerials for 240 yards and three scores.

On a night when Roane County (9-2) dominated the time of possession at 30 minutes, the big-play Panthers held a 475-403 total yards advantage and were aided by three RCHS turnovers and nine penalties.

Neither program was able to find paydirt in the opening 12 minutes, but early in the second Javon Letourneau took a sweep and had enough for the first down, but Panther Kohan Ramsey was able to strip him and recover the ball at the Panther 31.

Two plays later the fireworks started when Collins and Elliott hooked up for a 71-yard bomb that he caught at the Raider 40 as Clay County took the lead for good at 7-0 with 9:23 left in the half following Jaxon Brown’s extra point.

Raider signal-caller Jacob Greathouse returned the ensuing kickoff 26 yards and it was a 7-6 game just 73 seconds later when Garrett Brabham took a handoff, bounced off his own lineman and then galloped 48 yards down the Raider sideline to the end zone, but the conversion pass failed.

Roane County’s defense looked like it had the Panthers exactly where they wanted them as the visitors faced a third-and-21 from their own 35, but Nichols beat 1-on-1 coverage and Collins found him for a 65-yard scoring strike. Brown’s extra point was blocked to keep it a 13-6 affair with the clock at 6:27.

Once again, Jacob Greathouse had a key 40-yard kickoff return as the Raiders soon faced a third-and-1 at the Panther 17. After a false start, Letourneau was stopped by Blake Coleman for no gain before Jaden Morris ended the drive with a sack.

On the second play of the ensuing drive with Nichols in the Wildcat, he raced down the left seam and went 67 yards untouched to the end zone for a 19-6 advantage at the 1:51 mark.

Things soon went from bad to worse for the Raiders, who watched Christian Bryant pounce on a fumble caused by Brody Scarbro.

Still playing without a safety, the Roane County defense watched Elliott beat 1-on-1 coverage again. This time a 44-yard touchdown pass from Collins made it 25-6 as the two-point conversion toss failed.

Roane County, which got the ball to start the contest, managed to score before the half to cut it to 25-12.

Koltyn Starcher, who surpassed 1,000 rushing yards, raced for 31 stripes before Jacob Greathouse hooked up with Cooper Greathouse on a 16-yard hot pass for a score with 2.2 seconds left, but the deficit remained a baker’s dozen when the conversion run was no good.

The Collins to Elliott show continued on the first play of the third as the wideout made a leaping 37-yard grab. Even though the Panthers soon had it goal-to-go from the 1, the drive ended with an end zone interception by Jacob Greathouse.

Roane County was unable to move the pigskin and the Panthers got a blocked punt from Nick Williams, but Clay County couldn’t add to its lead as Brown’s 29-yard field goal was blocked by Quinton Cooper.

The Raiders tried a fake punt with less than 3 minutes left in the third from their own 31, but Jacob Greathouse was stopped after a gain of 10. Thanks to a dead ball personal foul penalty, the Panthers were in business at the Roane County 26.

Following a holding call that negated a touchdown run by Scarbo, Collins hooked up with Nichols for the 36-yard scoring strike and a 31-12 advantage with 2:36 still on the clock as the conversion pass failed.

The host Raiders of head man Paul Burdette had to start the ensuing drive at their own 10 following a block in the back.

Although Jacob Greathouse darted 27 yards for a first down, he later had to leave the game for one play with the Raiders facing a second-and-6 at the Panther 42. Letourneau took the snap in the backfield, but was stripped as Elliott recovered. Letourneau, who came into the affair at less than 100%, left injured and didn’t return.

Roane County’s defense then forced a punt, but the Raiders turned the ball over on downs and the Panthers went deep yet again on first down.

Collins went back to Elliott yet again, this time for a 57-yard catch-and-run six-pointer as the wideout finally managed to snare the ball after bobbling it and having it go off his helmet and shoulder pads. The conversion pass failed, but the Raiders trailed by 25 with 8:44 left in their season.

Clay County, which won its lone playoff game in school history 7-0 versus No. 3 Ravenswood as the No. 14 seed back in 2001 under then head coach Ron Sirk, had gallops of 37 and 30 yards by Scarbro before Blake Coleman’s 5-yard TD burst and Brown’s extra point set the final score at the 2:25 mark.

Starcher rushed 16 times for 94 yards while Jacob Greathouse finished with game-highs of 19 carries for 117 yards.

Scarbo paced the Panther rushing attack with 86 yards on eight carries.
