PARKERSBURG – The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation & Regional Affiliates has announced the establishment of the Paul W. Merkel III Memorial Fund, a scholarship created in loving memory of a young man whose life was defined by his love of sports, family, music, and lifting up the underdog.
A 2005 graduate of Parkersburg High School, Merkel was a member of the Big Reds soccer and track teams, serving as team captain and competing at the state level. His love for sports continued throughout his life, cheering on Manchester United, D.C. United, and the Dallas Cowboys.
Merkel’s lighthearted spirit, quick wit, and genuine kindness made everyone feel included and valued, according to the press release announcing the scholarship. Whether in his hometown of Parkersburg or in the many places life took him – such as Morgantown; Washington, D.C.; Savannah; and the French Quarter of New Orleans – he had a gift for connection, the release said. He believed deeply that “nobody is perfect, but you matter.” His friends and family remember him for making others feel seen, welcome, and important.
To celebrate his legacy and his passion for soccer, the Paul W. Merkel III Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior from PHS who has demonstrated commitment and dedication by participating in the boys’ soccer program for all four years, the release said. This one-time award recognizes a student who exemplifies perseverance, teamwork, and spirit — qualities that Merkel embodied both on and off the field, the release said.
“Paul believed in the importance of being a good teammate and a good friend,” said his mother, Sandra Guthrie. “He made everyone feel that they mattered. This scholarship is our way of carrying forward that message, to remind young people that their effort, heart and kindness count.”
Soccer played a meaningful role in Merkel’s life, providing joy, physical activity and a sense of community. That love for the sport continues with his older brother Jacob and niece Jessica. Through this fund, his family hopes to encourage young people to stay active, connected and engaged with their community.
While the award is not reserved for the star player or top academic achiever, it celebrates the student who shows up, gives their best, supports their teammates and leads with integrity.
“The Merkel family’s generosity ensures that Paul’s legacy of kindness and sportsmanship will continue to touch lives for generations,” said Julie Posey, senior development and stewardship officer of the foundation. “We are honored to help share his story and steward this meaningful tribute.”
