WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Parkersburg High School girls basketball team will be one of eight teams selected in the field for the fifth annual Battle for the Springhouse at America’s Resort, The Greenbrier on Jan. 30-31.

The event consists of a four-team field for the girls: defending Battle for the Springhouse champion Greenbrier East, Morgantown, Parkersburg and Riverside.

On the boys side, the event welcomes Greenbrier East, Bridgeport, James Monroe and Wyoming East.

Games are scheduled for Colonial Hall with game times and matchups to be determined at a later date.

Parkersburg advanced to the Class AAAA quarterfinals last season and finished 17-8. The Big Reds return starters Kennedy Porter and Frances Guice. This marks Parkersburg’s first appearance in the Battle of the Springhouse.

Greenbrier East is coached by United States Senator Jim Justice, which won the Battle for the Springhouse girls division in 2022 and 2025. A bulk of the team returns from a 24-2 season. The Spartans advanced to the Class AAA semifinals behind returning all-state selections Kennedy Stewart and Ava Workman.

Morgantown is coming off a 20-4 record and a Class AAAA state runner-up finish. Despite losing Tatum DeVries, who transferred, and Kayli Kellogg, who suffered a significant preseason injury, the Mohigans return plenty of star power with Brenna Nelson.

Riverside is another team making its debut at The Greenbrier event. Despite winning just five games last season, the Warriors are a program on the rise with the likes of Ava Ward and Cianna Groom.

Among the four teams in the boys field, Bridgeport captured the Class AAA state championship last season. The Indians finished 26-1 and figure to replace Anderson McDougal and Gavin Williams.

Greenbrier East is making its fourth appearance in the Battle for the Springhouse . The SPartans won seven of their final eight games last season behind returning letterwinners Brody Hamric and Nathan Dixon.

Another school making its debut at The Greenbrier is James Monroe, which finished 19-3 after losing in the regional semifinal. The Mavericks return Kadyn Hines and Ryan Mann.

Despite experiencing a mid-season coaching change, Wyoming East managed to finish 19-4 and advance to the Class AA state semifinals. The Warriors, who placed second in the inaugural Battle for the Springhouse in 2022, are led by Talan Muscari and Braxton Morgan.

Starting at $2.99/week.
