Beverly/Lowell opens regional tourney with win

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 used a four-run fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie and defeat De Pere (Wisc.) 9-4 in Wednesday’s Great Lakes Regional Tournament opener at Lee Pfund Stadium.

Post 389/750 set the tone early, plating a pair of runs on RBI singles by Dominic Fry and Owen McCoy. Carter Wheeldin began the inning with a single and a stolen base.

Beverly/Lowell added another run in the top of the second. Jack McCurdy tripled with one out and after Cameron Sidwell was hit by a pitch, McCurdy and Sidwell executed a double-steal to make it 3-0.

De Pere answered in the bottom half of the second. Rory Obma hit an RBI triple to get his team on the board and also scored on the same play on a throwing error to cut it to 3-2.

Each team scored once in the third. McCoy picked up his second two-out RBI hit in as many at-bats after Grady Hesson reached on an error. De Pere answered right back after Mason Sequin singled, stole second, went to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.

De Pere, the Wisconsin state champions, finally tied it in the bottom of the fourth after Obma doubled and Caden Krutz singled.

However, the fifth inning proved to be the difference.

Fry singled, Hesson was plunked and McCoy walked to load the bases. Clayton Miller’s base on balls plated a run to make it 5-4. McCurdy’s fielder’s choice grounder brought in another before Wheeldin’s double to left drove in two more to extend the lead to 8-4.

Post 389/750 added some insurance in the sixth when Miller singled home Fry, who went 4 for 4 and scored three runs. Wheeldin was 3 for 5 and McCoy was 2 for 3.

JR Curry started and pitched four innings for Beverly/Lowell. He allowed four hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out four. Hesson earned the win in relief, pitching three scoreless innings to close it out. He allowed just two hits and one walk with four Ks.

Isaac Poehlman took the loss for De Pere, allowing nine hits, seven earned runs and three base on balls over 4 2/3 innings.

He punched out five Beverly/Lowell hitters. Sequin pitched 2 1/2 frames of relief, giving up four hits, one run and walk with two strikeouts.
