Brandon Hileman’s buzzer-beater lifts Bulldogs to first state tournament berth since 2006

WEST UNION — For the first time since 2006, Doddridge County is headed to the state tournament.

Brandon Hileman drove the baseline and put up a shot at the buzzer that banked off the glass and in to give the Bulldogs a 47-46 win over Madonna in Tuesday’s Class A regional co-final.

“We thank the good Lord above for His blessings,” said Doddridge head coach Paul Burnside. “We set out a goal at the beginning of the year — we have banners at the gym and we wanted to put our number on a banner. I’m happy our community gets to experience this. I’m just proud of our team and our coaching staff.”

Hileman and Jerod Trent scored 10 points apiece for DCHS (18-7), which will be the No. 7 seed at the state tournament and play second-seeded Tug Valley at 1 p.m. next Wednesday. Jaden Solomon led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Jacob DeHaven added seven.

The Blue Donns (11-14) were led by Anthony Mascio’s game-high 18 points, while Luca Muzzi added 14.

The rest of the single-A bracket shakes out as such — No. 3 East Hardy vs. No. 6 Cameron, 9:30 a.m. next Wednesday; No. 1 Tucker County vs. No. 8 Huntington St. Joe’s, 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday; and No. 4 Webster County vs. No. 5 James Monroe at 9 p.m. next Wednesday.

The Doddridge-Tug winner will play the East Hardy-Cameron winner in next Friday’s semifinals at 7:15 p.m., with the championship game set for 5 p.m. next Saturday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
