Five Pioneer baseball players named all-region

Marietta College placed five players on the 2021 D3baseball.com All-Mideast Region Team announced Tuesday. Outfielder Turner Hill and pitcher Sam Mathews earned first team honors. First baseman Drew Holderbach and pitcher Gino Sabatine were named to the second team, while third baseman Damian Yenzi was a third team honoree.

Hill, the Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Year, hit .449 with 18 doubles, three triples and one home run in his first season with the Pioneers. The Pioneer leadoff hitter is currently leading NCAA Division III with 88 hits and 67 runs scored. Hill’s .449 batting average and 30 stolen bases was tops in the OAC.

The OAC Pitcher of the Year, Mathews finished the 2021 season with an 8-3 record, eight saves and a 1.47 earned run average. He currently ranks in the top-10 in NCAA Division III with 24 appearances, eight saves and few walks per nine innings allowing just 0.74 free passes per nine innings pitched. Mathews led the OAC in earned run average and saves and was second in wins and strikeouts (84).

Holderbach finished the season with a .371 batting average, 16 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 55 runs-batted-in. He led the OAC in RBIs and ranks among the national leaders in driving in runs. In addition to his impressive offensive numbers, Holderbach played error-free baseball at first base this spring.

Sabatine posted a 9-1 record with a 2.53 earned run average as Marietta’s number one starting pitcher. He led the OAC with 14 starts, nine wins and 78.1 innings pitched. His earned run average was third-best in the conference, and he tied for sixth in strikeouts with 57.

Yenzi started all 44 games at third base and batted .349 with 19 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 33 RBI. He fielded an impressive .950 at the hot corner. Yenzi led the OAC in hit by pitches, getting plunked 16 times this spring. His 19 doubles ranked second in the conference.

The Etta Express went 38-6 on the season winning the OAC Regular Season and Tournament championships. Marietta made its 43rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament advancing to the regional finals before falling to Rowan.
