Letter to the Editor: Thank you for learning

(Letter to the Editor - Graphic Illustration/MetroCreativeConnection)

I attended the Civil War Roundtable of the Mid-Ohio Valley’s presentation of “General Moses: Stories from the life of Harriet Tubman.” It was wonderful and a very good crowd in attendance.

What I was so surprised, delighted and appreciative of was the young Caucasian parents with their, I’m assuming, elementary aged children. What a blessing it was as some school boards in some states are taking the history of enslaved Black Americans out of their curriculum.

In one state, they are teaching that slavery was beneficial to the slaves as it taught trades to my enslaved ancestors, and I know these enslaved people had the scars on their backs from the beatings and had the scars of various forms of mutilation to attest to this “benefit.”

This frame of mind is just too ignorant for me to comment on any further.

Again, thank you parents and children for your interest in learning about and acknowledging the truth of this brutal and cruel form of subjugation.
