Letter to the Editor: Biblical back-and-forth

(Letter to the Editor - Graphic Illustration/MetroCreativeConnection)

My previous letter to this paper cited the Biblical God’s policy that abortion was not murder. My letter consisted largely of Biblical quotations, which I believe stood on their own. I personally said I do not approve of abortion generally; Biblical God said nothing about it. Another author replied without rebutting my letter, saying I am wrong even though we agree in our distaste for abortion and the need to regulate it. He did not recognize, I think, that it was Biblical God that he was accusing. He gave no Bible verses, evidence or rationale for his position. His was the only reply.

Then the letter-writer wrote a criticism of the environmentalists’ objection to littering the earth with plastics because, he says, while it is “not good” that whales are ingesting plastic, we should be concentrating on eliminating abortion. Whales do not have souls, he said without proof, and implied that unborn infants do, a contention that he had defaulted on with his reply to my letter. Note the Biblical God says a whale was chosen to perform a sacrament on Jonah. (Jonah 2:1-10)

If we agree that it is not good for whales to ingest plastic why not mandate that all plastic be biodegradable or readily recyclable? And the idea of wooden toothbrushes sounds good to me.
