Letter to the Editor: Another reason to be thankful
(Letter to the Editor - Graphic Illustration/MetroCreativeConnection)
While talking on the phone with a friend today I realized I haven’t told you about all the kind things people have been doing for me. About 5 years ago I got a rapid case of scoliosis. In 10 months time my spine had twisted and shifted over to the side so much I lost 5 inches in height; 5’2″ down to 4’9″. When at its worst, I am humped over and my crotch is under my right breast. I’m not telling you this to get sympathy but to explain what others see when they look at me. Through prayer I have been given more time before I go for my only other option, which is rods in my back top to bottom which would mean never being able to bend or twist ever again.
My husband and I have been called “The Dancers” over the years by many including band members and other dancers. Years ago we taught line dancing and country couples. We also enjoyed ballroom dancing. Since last weekend I know of 3 people who still referred to us as The Dancers, which is quite a compliment since I’m using a cane half the time lately. Strangers hug me and tell me how nice it is to see me out on the dance floor, not giving up, or saying that I’ve still got it. I thank them and say how they should have seen us 10-20 years ago.
Have you ever been kissed on top of the head and introduce as “my little buddy?” They mean it as a term of endearment plus it makes me laugh so I don’t really mind. People bend down to me. I guess it’s so I’m not looking up their noses during an entire conversation.
Other times people back up to hold the door for me. I’m offered carry out service even on days I can say, “No thank you. I can do it myself today.” I’ve had cashiers come from the register side and customers in front of me in line put my groceries on the belt for me. One cashier didn’t get the quick response from the carry out person he requested so he locked his register and took my groceries out himself. On a rainy day a customer driving past me while I was putting my bags into the back of the van stopped, got out of her car, took over putting my bags in the van, then returned my buggy for me before she drove out of the parking lot.
These are the times when I know there is still good in this world. So often we only hear complaints about so many things it can be discouraging. Then along comes a stranger who treats me like family. Maybe I shouldn’t complain about my twisted body because it has given me opportunities to see the kind-hearted side of people. The side I might never had known as we passed by each other if circumstances were different . They are a blessing to me and hopefully they are blessed by their kind deeds. Keep your eyes open. You may be able to help someone who is having a rough day.
Thank you for letting me share another reason I have to be thankful.
