Letter to the Editor: Amend livestock ordinance

(Letter to the Editor - Graphic Illustration/MetroCreativeConnection)

On May 26, at Vienna’s City Council meeting I proposed that the City of Vienna needs to amend their Livestock Ordinance 505.06 to allow no less than two hens. A key point mentioned was how the citizens of Vienna should be encouraged to have small vegetable gardens and small manageable livestock, such as egg-laying hens to help combat the rising food prices. Other key points were that hens are not difficult to keep, there is no evidence that keeping hens will lower property values, and hens cans be a great alternative pet for those who suffer from fur allergies and cannot be around conventional pets such as cats or dogs. If someone is competent enough to take care of a dog, they are competent enough to take care of a couple hens.

The matter will be followed up on and a new ordinance will hopefully be presented in the next city council meeting June 9, 6 p.m. at the City Building on 29th Street. All residents of Vienna are welcome to attend the city council meeting and show support for this ordinance change.
