Organizations, supporters deserve praise for Nonprofit Challenge results

We are fortunate, here in the Mid-Ohio Valley, to be surrounded by organizations and individuals that recognize when there is a greater need to support vulnerable residents — and act accordingly.

Marietta Community Foundation’s annual Nonprofit Challenge drew an even greater response this year than was expected, pulling in tens of thousands of dollars in donated food and household items that will support 14 food pantries in Washington County. The Hathaway family alone made available $26,000 for grant funding.

The outpouring was so great that each of the food pantries will receive two deliveries of sorted supplies.

“This year’s Nonprofit Challenge exceeded every expectation we had,” said Heather Allender, president and CEO of the Marietta Community Foundation. “Our community didn’t just participate — they embraced the mission with heart, creativity and generosity.”

Blessing Birds, a local nonprofit that says its mission is “to ensure every child has the opportunity to fully participate in school activities and events, regardless of circumstance,” and that they are “committed to spreading kindness throughout the community through meaningful acts of compassion and serve,” was recognized in the top performer in the challenge.

“We are honored and overwhelmed by the support we received,” said Sarah Miller, founder of the organization. “Our team worked every single day with one goal in mind: to uplift families who need us.”

There are plenty of families who this season — and all year long — need the support of those who are able to give it. That is why it is so important to say thank you — to the Marietta Community Foundation, to the organizations that participated in the Nonprofit Challenge, and to the many people who supported those organizations. Washington County and the Mid-Ohio Valley are grateful.
