PARKERSBURG — Four Parkersburg City Council incumbents appeared poised to advance to the general election Tuesday night.

With all 69 precincts reporting, Council President Mike Reynolds was leading by the thinnest margin, 13 votes, with 174 votes over Cathy Whitlatch, 161, in the Republican primary for the District 6 seat. Arthur John Dunn was in third with 48 votes, according to final unofficial results.

If Reynolds’ lead holds through next week’s canvass, he will face Democrat Brenda Brum, who was unopposed, in the November general election.

Councilwoman Sharon Kuhl defeated Michael Hess 180-136 in the District 2 Republican primary. Kuhl will seek a third term in the fall against Democrat Sue Ellen Waybright, who was unopposed.

Councilwoman Cathy Dailey was appointed to the vacant District 9 seat in December. The newest incumbent had the largest lead over Alisa Prince, at 280-116 in that district’s Republican primary. She will face Democrat Jeff Fox, who served in the seat from 2017 to 2020 and was unopposed in the primary, this fall.

The other incumbent facing a primary challenger, District 4 Councilwoman Wendy Tuck, led David Atkinson in the Democratic primary, 77-32. She appeared set to face Republican Patrick McCormick in November, after he received 89 votes to Nikki Lawson’s 45.

In a Democratic primary between former council members, Nancy Wilcox defeated Sam Henry 79-35 in District 1. She will take on Republican Dave McCrady, who unseated her in 2016, in November.

“I feel good,” Wilcox said as the results came in Tuesday at the Wood County Courthouse.

Incumbent Councilwoman Jesse Cottrille did not seek re-election.

In District 3, former Republican Councilman Roger Brown defeated James “JJ” Hendershot in the primary, 203-119.

“I just want to thank everybody that voted,” Brown said.

Brown will take on Democrat Craig Metz in the general election. Republican Councilman Bob Mercer opted to run for the Wood County Board of Education.

In District 8, where Councilman Zach Stanley declined to seek another term, Andrew Borkowski received 238 votes to Sharon Maloney’s 110 in the Republican primary. He will face Democrat Trish Pritchard in the fall.

Neither Mayor Tom Joyce, a Republican, nor Democrat Sherry Dugan, a former councilwoman and longtime member of the city’s Municipal Planning Commission, faced opposition in the primary, setting up a second rematch between the two following Joyce’s victories in 2016 and 2020. If Joyce wins, he would go into his third consecutive term, the maximum allowed under the city’s charter.

There was no contested primary in District 5, where incumbent Councilman J.R. Carpenter, a Democrat, will face Republican Dell Pomeroy in a general election rematch of 2020.

Incumbent Councilman Chris Rexroad, a Republican, and Democrat Sonya Ashby were both unopposed in District 7.

Write-in candidates may still file to run by Sept. 17.
