PARKERSBURG — One of multiple efforts to repair, restore and preserve city streets is scheduled to get underway today, as Parkersburg City Council prepares to vote on additional paving funding tonight.

Phase one of the city’s asphalt rejuvenation project is set to start today on a $152,513.85 contract with Pavement Technology Inc. of Westlake, Ohio.

City Engineer Adam Stout said the company has 60 days to complete the project.

“Hopefully, it’s quicker,” he said.

The schedule Stout shared with the announcement shows the work could be done in as little as five days, weather and other factors permitting.

The project will rejuvenate 8.85 miles of pavement using the Reclamite sealer designed to restore flexibility and durability of asphalt surfaces, according to information provided by Stout.

It’s one of four approaches the city is taking in this year’s paving project, along with crack filling, micro surfacing and traditional paving.

The budget for all that work was $2,038,000, but total bids came in around $2,467,240, city officials said. A resolution on the agenda for tonight’s council meeting at 7:30 p.m. would allocate an additional $500,000 to cover that overage, which officials attributed to the first time making estimates for two new pavement preservation techniques and an increase in asphalt prices.

Mayor Tom Joyce said the additional funds, if approved, would go toward the traditional paving contract, which has not yet been awarded.

Flyers and street notification banners will be placed on affected streets the day before the work is to start.
