Southeast Ohio History Center hopes moviegoers find silent-era film striking

ATHENS, Ohio — Dennis James returns to the Southeast Ohio History Center for a special Silent Movie Monday performance of “Stage Struck!” on April 7.

Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with James from 7:15-7:45 p.m. with the film starting at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $18 for SOHC members, $75 for families and free for children under 12.

A 1925 comedy filmed in New Martinsville, W.Va., the movie features Gloria Swanson as the daydreaming waitress Jennie Hagen who fantasizes about becoming a famous actress, while in reality she and her cook boyfriend, Orme Wilson (Lawrence Gray), hope to one day own their own diner. Although Orme loves Jennie, he also has a weakness for stage stars — so when a riverboat theatrical crew comes to their town, he is smitten by lead actress Lillian Lyons (Gertrude Astor). Desperate to keep Orme, Jennie insists on going onstage to best Lillian, but is soon out of her depth.

Parking for the event is available at the History Center, and at Athens Middle School. Call 740-592-2280 ext 100 to reserve tickets or purchase tickets online by visiting southeastohiohistory.org.

Starting at $2.99/week.
