PARKERSBURG — The Smoot House Big Band will continue the “Sunday Jazz” tradition at 3 p.m. Sunday with special musical guests.
The band also will posthumously honor a former member of the sax section, Wood County music educator Randy Brannon.
During June for the Big Red Band 100th Anniversary celebration, a jazz quartet of PHS alums (with only one ringer) was a part of the evening entertainment. The group was so well received it was invited back for this event.
Members include Duane Flesher on piano, Hughie Lovelady on alto sax, Jeff Edman on drums and ringer Carter Eddy on bass. Guest vocalist Marsha Parsons will be featured with the band on “No More Blues.”
The afternoon also will honor Brannon, a longtime Wood County music educator and former member of the House Band. Former Oak Glen High School band director Neil Randolph will be on hand to present to Randy’s wife Tina a plaque upon his induction into the Phi Beta Mu (Tau Chapter) Hall of Fame in recognition of his many years of significant and lasting contributions to music education in the state of West Virginia.
The House Band will perform music as new as “Beauty and the Beast” and as old as “Speak Low” and “My Funny Valentine.”
Admission is free. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.
