Southeast Ohio History Center schedules Athens County events

ATHENS, Ohio — The Southeast Ohio History Center has a couple of upcoming events focused on Athens County history.

A walking tour of the historic Athens Asylum will be 2-4 p.m. July 13. The asylum was the largest building in Ohio when it was constructed.

The tour meets at the Kennedy Museum of Art, in front of the large Kirkbride Building. George Eberts, long time Asylum employee and local expert on the Athens Asylum, will be leading an outdoor walking tour of the grounds and buildings. His insights on patient treatment throughout the asylum’s 140-year existence are peppered with stories, personal anecdotes, and hidden locations throughout the grounds.

Tickets are $20 for non-members and $10 for students. Spaces are limited.

For more information or to reserve a space on the tour contact the Southeast Ohio History Center at 740-592-2280 or stop in at 24 West State Street in Athens, Ohio.

In another event, the Southeast Ohio History Center will host Rich Dahn, the historian for the Moonville Rail Trail, at noon July 18 as he shares his 40+ year interest in the Moonville area and historic tunnel in Vinton County.

Dahn wrote the application for the tunnel’s successful listing on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to do research on the lives and tragedies of many of the residents of the 1850-1925 time period between the towns of Zaleski and Mineral on the stretch of the Marietta-Cincinnati Railroad designated as the “Rail of Sorrow.”

For more information about this presentation or about the History Center call 740-592-2280 or visit www.southeastohio.org.
