PARKERSBURG — The Actors Guild of Parkersburg will present “Stephen Sondheim: A Birthday Celebration,” a One-Night Only special event celebration of the works of one of the greatest Broadway composer/lyricists on Friday, March 22.
The March 22 performance begins at 8 pm, at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg, located at 724 Market St., with tickets, all $20, available at actors-guild.com.
Known world-wide for his daring melodies and clever lyric writing, Sondheim wrote some of the greatest musicals of the 20th century including “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and “Merrily we Roll Along,” both of which are currently enjoying hit Broadway revivals, as well as “Into the Woods,” “Company,” “Follies” and many more. He was the recipient of multiple Tony Awards and an Academy Award for his work on the film “Dick Tracy.”
To celebrate what would have been Sondheim’s 94th birthday, the Guild will present a chronological journey through Sondheim’s works, beginning with “Something’s Coming” from “West Side Story” and “You Gotta Get a Gimmick” from “Gypsy,” for which he wrote the lyrics, and continuing through to later works like the Oscar-winning “Sooner or Later” from “Dick Tracy” and Sondheim’s most well-known song, “Send in the Clowns” from “A Little Night Music.”
Appearing in the tribute celebration will be Brianna Carson, Barbara Full, Tru Hill, Garrett Honse, George Litman, R.J. Lowe, Josh Martin, Sam Miser, Marsha Parsons, Willow Peyton, David Rexroad, and Su Voycik-Meredith, with concept and direction by R.J. Lowe.
