Belpre Alumni Association holds annual ice cream social
BELPRE — The Belpre High School Alumni Association held its annual ice cream social and cruise-in Saturday at Howes Groves Park after a hiatus last year due to COVID.
“We’ve got a good turn-out, and the weather has held up for us,” said Scott Church, president of the association and a 1973 Belpre High School graduate.
Hot dogs, ice cream, pies and cakes were available at the pavilion, while live music was performed and raffle prizes were awarded.
“This is our only moneymaker for us, our only fundraiser,” Church said. “What it supports is Belpre High School Alumni Association scholarships; we give out about 13 of them.”
The cruise-in attracted more than 40 cars, ranging from antique Fords, Chevrolets and Buicks to modern-day decorated sports cars. Attendees of all ages weaved through the rows of cars, admiring the exteriors and peeking inside.
“I like ice cream, I like cars, and I like to talk to people, so I decided to come from Almost Heaven over here to Ohio,” said attendee Steve Workman as he sat in a lawn chair and listened to the music.
Excited children ran through the grass to grab treats while they played, and the chatter of the community echoed through the air.
“I think it’s wonderful that we are able to give back to our school and be able to give students scholarships for them to be able to further their education,” said Jackie Cassady, the vice president of the association and a 1979 Belpre High School graduate.
