GRANTSVILLE — Hope Gas is providing the labor and equipment to build a junior Olympic swimming pool set to open on Labor Day Weekend.
Ground was broken in April on the $8.4 million $8.4 million community center and pool. The Calhoun County Community Center in the old Calhoun High School will serve at least seven counties in Central West Virginia.
The pool is scheduled to open on Labor Day Weekend.
“Hope Gas has been in West Virginia for almost 125 years and we pride ourselves on our history of giving back to the communities we serve,” Christine Mitchell, who leads Hope’s community engagement efforts, said, “This latest project in Grantsville is just another example of our company and employees stepping up to help those in need.”
The former high school was purchased by The 1982 Foundation, a non-profit (503c) group.

The Community Center will focus on childcare and development (INSPIRE program), entrepreneurial support and business development (ASPIRE program) and addiction recovery. In addition, the Community Center will have a farm-to-fork cooperative, a recreational guide and outfitter cooperative, goat farming cooperative, an art and antique collective, farmers’ market, recovery zone and animal shelter.
“The 1982 Foundation is very grateful for our neighbors, Hope Gas,” Crystal Mersh, president of The 1982 Foundation, said. “Their support and generosity is a key fact in the revitalization of our community.”
