MT. ZION — Men in the Calhoun County area now have hair- and beard-cutting services closer to home as a county native earlier this year opened the county’s only barber shop.

Susan Conrad dove into barber school after encouragement from her daughter and at 59 was the oldest person in her classes, but that did not stop her from working hard and earning her certification to open her own shop.

“I’m really kind of late at doing this, but I absolutely love it,” she said.

Stop N’ Barber Shop at 21 Chiropractic Drive in Mt. Zion specializes in barbering services at a low price. Conrad also is bringing back the traditional service of straight razor shaving.

“It’s a huge thing because it’s like a treat for the men because there’s a little massage that goes with it,” she said.

For the past 15 years, Conrad was a nanny for a local family, but after she lost that job, she was at a loss for what to do for work. One of her daughters suggested barbering since there wasn’t a shop in the area.

She attended school for a year and went in business with Hilary Lane to rent her shop space, which opened in January.

“I was super excited because I was going to have the only barber in the county. I don’t like being by myself,” Lane said.

Before Stop N’ Barber Shop opened, residents of the county would have to travel to Spencer or Parkersburg, Conrad said.

The name for the business came from Conrad’s experiences in school. The students did a lot of volunteer work which, sometimes included hair cuts at the homeless shelter. Conrad would always say “thanks for stopping in,” which her classmates said should be the name of her shop.

All services are $10.

“I made the prices so that people here can afford it,” Conrad said.

Conrad and Lane are following all guidelines as they operate their shops for the safety of their customers. They allow for plenty of time to clean and sanitize in between clients and wear masks for protection.

Stop N’ Barber Shop is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to moon Saturday.

Walk-ins are welcome, if nobody is in the chair.
