PARKERSBURG — Four different Big Reds drove in two runs apiece and T.J. McIntosh finished with a two-hitter as Parkersburg blanked South Charleston, 11-0, in five innings here Wednesday evening at Bennett Stump Field.

The two Mountain State Athletic Conference programs both came in on losing streaks. PHS snapped a three-game slide and improved to 4-4 with a game at 5 p.m today at Warren. The Black Eagles, who won their opener, suffered a seventh straight defeat as skipper Ken Samms’ club returns to action at 6 p.m. today at Capital.

“He wasn’t at his best, but he did a nice job,” said PHS head coach Alan Burns, who watched McIntosh walk six and record four strikeouts. “Defensively, we played well behind him and got some key hits there.

“That’s what we’ve been doing in these games where we’ve been losing. One game we left 12 runners on and another game 13 runners on. You can’t do that and tonight the kids got hits in key situations.”

Through three innings, the red and white held a 4-0 lead, but were just 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

That all changed in a seven-run fourth where PHS sent 11 batters to the dish and went 4 for 7 with RISP.

Leadoff hitter Hayden Morris started the fourth with a base on balls and later added a two-run double to account for the final runs. Morris scored to stretch the advantage to 5-0 on Max Anderson’s RBI two-bagger. After Jordan Batten reached via an error and catcher Nolan Brace coaxed a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Anthony Craig, the bases were loaded for Austin Curtis. The first baseman, who made an over the shoulder bucket catch in foul ground to record the first out of the fifth on a ball hit by Tyson Burke, singled to left to score pinch-runner Carter King.

The onslaught continued with Kyle Moore collecting his second run-batted-in via a fielder’s choice. No. 8 hitter Connor Walker, who walked in his previous two at-bats and added a stolen base, then laced a two-run to left center before McIntosh walked and Morris followed with his big hit.

Nick Workman was charged with the loss and was lifted after walking Walker, his first batter of the second.

Nathan Lindenmuth reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the first. That was followed by an Anderson single, a Batten walk and then Brace’s RBI knock to left and Curtis’ first fielder’s choice RBI.

South Charleston, which went 0 for 5 with RISP, appeared to have something going in the top of the first. Burke singled, but was thrown out trying to steal second by Brace. Logan Runyan walked and Derek Sheffield followed with a two-out base on balls, but McIntosh punched out Addison Strickland to avoid any damage.

The center fielder Morris made a nifty running catch on a sinking liner by Workman for the first out of the second, but SCHS left runners on the corners. The only other time the visitors got a man to third came in the third. Catcher Ty Sizemore walked and courtesy runner Omar Allen swiped second and was at third following a wild pitch, but McIntosh escaped the jam.

The Big Reds’ other two runs came in the third. Batten singled to left and wound up on third following a two-base error. He later scored on a passed ball. Craig’s run made it 4-0 after he entered to run for Brace and came home on Moore’s RBI fielder’s choice.

“We want to get on a role here,” Burns added. “But, Saturday we go down to St. Albans. Might as well go down there and make a statement I guess because they are number one in the state for a reason. They’re very good.”
