Stewart homers but Reds fall short vs. Marlins, 8-1

MIAMI (AP) — Sal Stewart’s fourth home run of the year was all the offense the Cincinnati Reds could muster in an 8-1 loss to the Miami Marlins Thursday.

Miami rallied to win the final two games of the four-game set to salvage a split.

Thursday, it was right-hander Max Meyer (1-0) who silenced the Reds’ bats, going five innings with three walks, four strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

That run came in the top of the fifth when Stewart, who drove in a run in all four games in his hometown of Miami, drove a ball over the center field fence.

That cut it to 4-1, as the Marlins had already touched up rookie starter Rhett Lowder (1-1).

After the Marlins scratched across a run in the first, they brought in three more in fourth. Owen Caissie’s two-run double made it 3-0, and Javier Sanoja brought in Caissie on a single to right.

Sanoja drove in Caissie again on another single in the sixth, and in the seventh it was Caissie who collected an RBI knock to make it 6-1. Agustin Ramirez’s two-run single in the eighth put the Marlins up seven.

Lowder went 5 1/3 with four earned runs and eight hits allowed. He walked two batters and fanned two.

Tyler Phillips pitched the final three innings to get credit for a save.

Cassie and Sanoja both were 3 for 4 while Ramirez was 2 for 5.

Spencer Steer and Mat McLain had two hits apiece to lead the Reds, who have a three-game homestand with the Angels starting Friday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
