WILLIAMSTOWN — Chris Upton finished a double shy of the cycle here Thursday evening at Bill Coiner Field to help lead Linsly to a season sweep of Williamstown after the Cadets doubled up the Yellowjackets, 12-6.
On Tuesday, the Cadets (6-3-1) snapped the Yellowjackets’ four-game winning streak with an 11-1 mercy rule victory.
Although the ‘Jackets had a 4-1 lead after two innings for starter Wyatt Siley, the Cadets chased him during a three-run fifth where they took the lead for good.
“I thought we played well at times,” admitted WHS skipper Levi Maxwell. “I think there were times we didn’t play well. I think if we eliminate some of the walks and stuff like that it’s a different game. A lot of it dictates the strike zone. It depends on that situation, but I think the issues we’re having a lot of times is we get guys on base and we didn’t have those big hits.
“We did at the end there. We had a couple, but you got to have that throughout a game against a good team like that. I mean they are fundamentally sound. They made a bunch of great plays. We did hit the ball hard, but it was right at people and they made plays. I mean that’s baseball. I’m not concerned about it.”

Upton led the visitors with a 4-for-4 performance that included a two-run single in the fifth, which led to Siley being replaced by lefty Brayden Strcula. The center fielder scored thrice and joined teammate Jaxon Murray with a two-run homer in the seventh against ‘Jacket Ben Raines. Upton also scored in the first after a Dom Fato sacrifice via a Murray RBI groundout.
“It’s just one of those things we come out and play a tough schedule on purpose and it’s going to help us down the road,” stressed Maxwell. “I don’t think they may not understand that now, but it definitely helps.
“It’s tough to sit here and watch as you have a team on the ropes early and don’t put them away. A lot of that is inexperience. We got some really young guys out there, but that’s baseball. Our guys played well. Their team played well and it was good baseball.”
Linsly starter Kolson Ludolph only worked the first and was lifted after three batters in the second in favor of eventual winning pitcher Vinny Gorrence (6IP, 0BB, 3 SO).
Ludolph plunked Wyatt Powell to open the game and he scored on Siley’s RBI groundout. WHS took its first lead when Ludolph walked Austin McDonald with the bases loaded to force in Jackson Fulton, who had singled and stole second.

Raines, the No. 9 hitter, got the second going with a single back up the box. Powell followed with a bunt single and Fulton took one for the team to load the bases with nobody out.
However, WHS managed just two runs via a Siley RBI fielder’s choice and a run-scoring single by Tyler Keiser.
Williamstown (8-6) didn’t score again until after falling behind 8-4 via a two-run sixth. Colt Rinard reached on an error to get the inning started and then Raines doubled to left-center. The hosts closed to within a pair after Powell had a run-scoring double that went off the fence in left.
The Cadets closed the deficit to 4-3 after pushing across two runs in the third. Upton tripled and crossed on Fato’s sac fly. Murray walked, stole second and third and came home on Tucker Doty’s RBI groundout.
A two-out walk by Siley to No. 9 hitter Donavan Jones led to a run in the fourth thanks to Fato’s RBI knock.

The three-run fifth was highlighted by a one-out solo blast from Preston Hartley and a two-out, two-run Upton single. Murray singled and scored in the sixth after Brody Prout knocked him in.
Linsly is back in action for a noon twinbill on Saturday at The Kiski School while the ‘Jackets welcome in Charleston Catholic at 5 p.m. today.
“Right back at it,” said Maxwell, who plans to start Jenner Burge. “Charleston is a pretty good team.
“A top 10 team and they got a lot of guys that are good. Hopefully we’ll see a good arm and we’ll give it a go.”
