Hoops roundup: Vikings rout Monarchs
RIPLEY — Ripley put 46 first-half points, including 30 in the second quarter, to bury visiting John Marshall early Thursday night en route to a 76-52 victory.
The Vikings (16-4), winners of five straight, got a team-high 15 points from Creed Waskey. Parker Smith, Blake Justice and Matthew Stellato added 14 apiece, while Kyler Doss chipped in 12 on four 3-pointers.
RHS, which plays host to East Fairmont on Saturday, shot 52% (31 for 60) from the floor and made 12 of 26 (46%) from beyond the arc.
The Monarchs (9-11) got a game-high 16 points from Jackson Helms. Preston Watkins also reached double figures with 10.
Frontier 66, Caldwell 45
CALDWELL, Ohio — Frontier picked up a huge 66-45 win over a short-handed Caldwell squad Thursday night.
Playing without Dylan Schott and Guiler Preston, the Redskins fell to 15-6 on the year while the Cougars improved to 14-7.
Frontier, which led 14-12 after one, 28-18 at halftime and 45-28 going into the fourth, got a game-high 17 points from Kason Hoff. Jacob Bowersock added a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double while Caleb Kirkpatrick matched Bowersock’s points total. Avery Powell and Hunter Taylor tallied nine and eight points, respectively, with Powell dishing out six assists and Taylor grabbing six boards.
Gentry Brown led CHS with 15 points. Beckett Long added 12 and Dalton Egnot netted 10.
GIRLS
Unioto 55, Marietta 34
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — First team All-Ohioan and 2,000-point scorer Milee Smith led the charge for Unioto in a 55-34 tournament win over Marietta Thursday night.
Smith led all scorers with 27 points as the Sherman Tanks (21-2) ousted the Tigers (12-12) in the Division III district quarterfinals.
Keyairah Beard added 10 points for UHS, which advanced to face either Sheridan or Athens Monday in the district semis.
Marietta, which saw seniors Hayleigh Chidester, Lauren Elliott, Taylor Zoller and Campbell Stanley play their final prep games, was paced by Braxtyn Kroft’s 13 points. Chidester added eight and Fiona Fowler tallied seven.
Hillsboro 56, Warren 44
HILLSBORO, Ohio — Four players scored in double figures to lead Hillsboro past Warren 56-44 in Thursday’s Division IV district quarterfinal matchup.
Tylee Davis led all scorers with 18 points while teammates Ella Jordan (15), Annia Young (11) and Kobe Miles (10) all reached double digits as well for Hillsboro (15-8), which led 13-6 after one, 29-17 at halftime and 43-25 going into the fourth.
The Warriors (11-12) got 11 points from DeLaney Gates, 10 from Danica Gates, seven from Juliana Huffman and six from Jayda Murray. Warren, which has no seniors, outscored the Indians 19-13 over the final eight minutes.
St. Marys 69, Oak Glen 64
CHESTER — St. Marys escaped Oak Glen with a 69-64 victory Thursday night.
The Blue Devils (16-4) started strong and led 17-9 after one and 34-18 at halftime. The Golden Bears (12-9) rallied in the fourth but SMHS held on to win.
Brynnley Bulluck led the Blue Devils with 25 points to go along with six steals, five rebounds and four assists. Anna Bennett added a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double while Laney Watkins finished with 21 points, eight boards and three steals. Landrey Riggs only scored three but dished out a team-high 10 dimes.
Ritchie County 40, Robert C. Byrd 33
ELLENBORO — Ritchie County is happy to have a week off.
The Rebels capped a stretch of seven games in 10 days with a 40-33 win over Robert C. Byrd Thursday. RCHS, which finished the regular season at 14-7, will play host to Clay-Battelle at 7 p.m. next Thursday in a tournament opener.
Elsa Law led Ritchie with 12 points. Callie Smith added 11 and Chelsie Jeffrey chipped in eight. The Rebels trailed 7-6 after one but rallied for a 19-16 halftime advantage. It was 33-30 going into the fourth, where Ritchie limited RCB to just three points.
The Eagles were paced by Kendall Sturm with 11 points while Savannah Sherrard added nine.
OGHS got a game-high 32 points from Ella Stewart, who drained nine 3-pointers, while Emma Everett added 12 and Mikayln Blach netted 10.
