Hoops roundup: Ritchie girls knock off Williamstown, 50-45

ELLENBORO — Coming off back-to-back losses to Parkersburg Catholic and St. Marys, a hard fought win over a quality opponent was just what the doctor ordered for Ritchie County.

The Rebels hung on to beat Williamstown 50-45 Tuesday night to snap a two-game skid and improve to 5-2. Ritchie entered the game ranked fourth in the Class A West Virginia Schools Athletic Coaches Association while WHS was third in double-A.

Williamstown, which trailed by 10 in the fourth but rallied to get within one, dropped to 7-2.

RCHS, which plays host to South Harrison Thursday, led 10-8 after one, 23-21 at halftime and 30-27 after three. Elsa Law scored a game-high 21 points for Dave McCullough’s squad, which also got 12 points from Abbigayl Cox and nine from Chelsie Jeffrey.

Law and Jeffrey grabbed eight and seven rebounds, respectively, while Law and Callie Smith tallied three assists apiece.

The Yellowjackets, who visit Tyler Consolidated Thursday, were led by Quinn Bunch’s 16 points. Maggie Frye added eight, Arissa Burt netted seven and Anna Cosner chipped in six.

Parkersburg Catholic 57, Wirt County 37

ELIZABETH — In a battle of two top 10 Class A teams, No. 7 Parkersburg Catholic outscored No. 9 Wirt County 21-5 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 57-37 victory Tuesday.

The Tigers (4-4) trailed 14-10 after one but had it knotted up at 23-all by halftime. The Crusaderettes (7-1) took a 36-32 advantage into the final period before taking control.

Seneca Lang led all scorers with 22 points to pace PCHS, which plays host to Calhoun County Thursday. Bryley Starkey added 12 points, Macy Singer chipped in 11 and Annie Tokodi-Ruth tallied seven for the victors.

Wirt, which heads to top-ranked Gilmer County Friday, got 15 points from Breigyn Dawson and 10 from Lia Casenelli.

St. Marys 74, Tyler Consolidated 41

KIDWELL — Brynnley Bulluck’s game-high 35 points helped lift Class A No. 2 St. Marys past Tyler Consolidated 74-41 Tuesday.

Bulluck made 15 baskets, including two 3-pointers, and 3 for 3 at the free-throw line for the Blue Devils, who improved to 7-2 and play host to Doddridge County Thursday.

Anna Bennett double-doubled for SMHS, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Laney Watkins added 15 points, six boards, four assists and three steals. Bulluck chipped in six rebounds, three dimes and a game-high seven steals.

St. Marys shot 44.3% (31 for 70) from the floor and committed just six turnovers.

The Silver Knights received 17 points from Katie Grimm plus eight from Katie Householder.

Ravenswood 49, Poca 21

RAVENSWOOD — Jayme Salser put up 18 points, six assists and five steals to lead Ravenswood past Poca 49-21 Tuesday.

Salser knocked down five 3-pointers for the Red Devils, who improved to 5-2 and play host to Buffalo on Thursday.

Emily Andrade added 10 points, eight dimes and four steals. Rachel Lambert finished with seven points, nine boards and three rejections while Marley Cole and Zemory Wise chipped in six points and seven rebounds apiece.

The Dots, who trailed 18-8 after one, 29-16 at halftime and 39-18 going into the fourth, received 13 points from Chloe Wheeler.

BOYS

Marietta 80, Eastern 43

MARIETTA — After a career-high 33-point performance Friday, Zaiden Wittekind picked up right where he left off.

The Tigers senior got things started Tuesday against Eastern with a fastbreak dunk and went on to score a game-high 23 points to lead Marietta to an 80-43 victory.

Wittekind hit four 3-pointers for MHS, which improved to 9-2 and heads to Fort Frye on Friday.

The Tigers led 14-10 after one. Ethan Edwards, who paced Eastern with 14 points, knocked down a trey to get the visitors within one to open the second, but Marietta took over from there. The Tigers led 36-25 at halftime and 62-40 after three.

Four players finished in double figures for the orange and black — Owen Riley tallied 15 points, Trey Hawkins netted 13 and Logan Grosklos chipped in 12. Graesyn Moat finished just shy of double digits with nine points off the bench while Braiden Plaugher added seven.

Eastern, which dropped to 4-9, got nine points from Derrick Barnes and seven from Colton Lloyd.

Wood County Christian 89, Valley 43

WILLIAMSTOWN — Wood County Christian improved to 5-2 on the year after rolling to an 89-43 victory over Valley Tuesday.

Cameron Coppernoll led all scorers with 23 points for the Wildcats, who led 23-12 after one, 45-23 at halftime and 71-31 going into the fourth. Asher Fenton and Angelus Palata added 15 points apiece, Peyton Russell tallied 12 and Daniel Cunningham also reached double figures with 11. For good measure, Jason Blackwell chipped in eight.

Gaige Wichterman led the Lumberjacks with 14 points. Zane Fluharty and Wyatt Rogers added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Ripley 70, Point Pleasant 30

RIPLEY — Up 16-15 after a quarter, Ripley put visiting Point Pleasant away with a 23-3 run in the second period en route to a 70-30 blowout win Tuesday.

The Vikings (6-2) led 39-18 at halftime and 58-23 after three. Blake Justice paced Ripley with 16 points. Parker Smith grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Caleb Parsons (12) and Brady McVay (10) both scored in double figures while Jackson Moore added eight and Kyler Doss and Creed Waskey chipped in seven apiece. Waskey also finished with eight assists and four steals.

Carrsen Lambert led the Big Blacks with 10 points and three blocks. The shot just 30% (11 for 37) compared to 52% (27 for 52) for Ripley, which plays host to Lincoln County Friday.
