PARKERSBURG — Laken Dawson pumped in 14 of her game-high 24 points after intermission here Tuesday night to help rally Valley past Parkersburg Christian, 54-49, during the third game of the 29th Mary ‘O’ Crusaderette Classic.

The 2-2 Lumberjills of head man Tom Shannon, who got nine markers from Michaela Miller, eight by Aubree Mason and six from Demi Long, rallied from a 29-17 halftime deficit to send the Knights to 1-3.

Dawson, who was named her team’s Player of the Game, tallied 10 points in the third as Valley took the lead for good 40 seconds into the fourth when Dawson found Kendall Loy open for a 3, which made it 39-38.

The Knights of first-year head coach Kevin Husk, who take on Class A, No. 4 Ritchie County on Monday evening in the Rebels’ Cowan-Spangler Memorial Tournament, were led by Player of the Game Shianna Posey, who finished with 18 points and was joined in double figures by Kenzi Lucas (16) and Katlyn Wood (10).

Parkersburg Christian actually trailed 13-11 after one, but squared it early in the second when Shayleigh Gard found Posey for a 19-foot jumper.

The Knights went into the break with a 29-17 cushion as both Gard and Lucas had a steal and a layup in the final minute.

Valley, which is off until a 6 p.m. showdown on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Wood County Christian, turned up its defense in the third. PC, which had 10 turnovers in the first half, committed eight in the quarter.

Although a Maddy Miller deuce tied the game at 36 late in the third, the Knights took the advantage into the fourth when Posey assisted on Alexis Williams’ buzzer-beater for a 38-36 advantage.

Following Loy’s trifecta to open the final eight minutes, Mason got a putback and then Long assisted on a Dawson deuce following a steal by Michaela Miller, which forced a PC timeout with 5:42 remaining as the Knights trailed 43-38.

While the game continued to go back and forth the rest of the way, Parkersburg Christian was unable to regain the lead or tie it.

The Knights only trailed 51-49 with 58.5 to go after a foul shot by Lucas, but Michaela Miller iced the game and set the final score from the charity stripe with 2.7 left on the clock after Long had previously added a freebie.

Michaela Miller pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while Mason and Maddy Miller grabbed eight caroms apiece.

Wood, who had a game-high seven steals, joined Lucas with 11 boards while Posey had 10.
