Hoops roundup: South boys hang on for 64-62 win over North Marion

SUMMERSVILLE — Parkersburg South hung on by the skin of its teeth Tuesday, defeating North Marion 64-62 in a battle of unbeatens in the Winter Classic.

Baron Davis, who had nine points off the bench for South, registered a steal in the final seconds to preserve the win for the Patriots, who improved to 5-0. Harry Silvis led the winners with 20 points, Taj Joyce added 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks and Matthew Mullen netted 10 points and eight boards.

Eli Ramsey scored a game-high 22 points for North Marion, which dropped to 3-1. Jacob Kucich and Conner Balwanz added 13 points apiece.

PSHS led 17-16 after one, but North Marion had it tied 32-all by halftime. The Patriots trailed 52-51 going into the fourth, but outscored NMHS 13-10 over the final eight minutes.

Wirt County 50, Sherman 41

ELIZABETH — Wirt County scored a huge win over visiting Sherman Tuesday in the championship game of the Roy Alltop Invitational, besting the Tide 50-41 to improve to 5-1 on the year.

The Tigers, who visit Parkersburg Catholic next Wednesday, got a game-high 20 points from Braylan Dawson. Easton Wyer added nine points and eight rebounds, Alex Bevel netted eight points and five assists while Jake Moore chipped in seven points and eight boards.

Wirt led 14-10 after one, 27-19 at halftime and 36-28 going into the fourth.

Sherman, which suffered its first setback of the campaign, got 11 points from Ryan Mollohan, nine from Chase Mills and eight apiece from Luke Tagliente and Trey Lester.

Roane 56, Calhoun 46

ELIZABETH — Roane County picked up its first win of the season for head coach Brayden Miller here Tuesday by handing Calhoun County a 56-46 setback in the consolation game of the Roy Alltop Invitational at Wirt County.

The 1-4 Raiders, who play next Tuesday at Clay County, were led by Will Odle’s 26 points and nine rebounds. Red Devil transfer Brennen Carpenter added 16 points and six boards while Cooper Greathouse had a game-high five steals. Phil Stricklen chipped in nine counters off the bench.

Chase Schoolcraft had 19 points, three boards and a trio of assists for the 2-5 Red Devils, who also got nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks from Cooper Morris.

CCHS, which heads Friday to Gilmer County, also received seven points and five caroms from Micah Allen.

Tyler Consolidated 85, Weir 64

KIDWELL — Tyler Consolidated had no trouble with visiting Weir Tuesday, jumping ahead early and cruising to an 85-64 victory.

The Silver Knights (2-4) led 25-6 after the first quarter and never looked back. Landon Boggs paced the hosts with 16 points. Cam Strode added 10, Kolbin Highley knocked down three 3-pointers for nine points, while John Mace, Cole Lemasters and Austin Peck tallied eight each.

Weir (2-4) was led by Jonathan Hoistman’s 14 points.

Marietta 69, Fairbanks 61 (OT)

MILFORD CENTER, Ohio — Marietta erased a 14-point deficit with five minutes to go to force overtime and escaped previously unbeaten Fairbanks with a 69-61 win Tuesday.

Nate Meihls, who led the Panthers with 16 points, hit a 3-pointer at the 5:05 mark to put Marietta in a 55-41 hole. Fairbanks didn’t score again until there was 1:41 remaining. By then, the Tigers were within striking distance.

Owen Riley knocked down three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to give Marietta momentum. Riley’s basket with 1:17 remaining cut it to 57-56, and Trey Hawkins’ bucket with 20 seconds left tied it at 58-all.

Fairbanks missed a shot at the buzzer to win it, forcing an extra session.

In OT, Hawkins stepped up for the Tigers, scoring six points, assisting Zaiden Wittekind on two dunks and registering four steals to make sure MHS left town with a victory. Hawkins led all scorers with 24 points. Riley added 18 while Wittekind and Logan Grosklos netted seven apiece.

Fairbanks (8-1) got 13 points each from Alek Orders and Evan Wiedmann. Luke Boehm added seven.

The Panthers led 16-15 after one, 27-26 at halftime and 44-38 after three.

Marietta, which improved to 7-2, returns home Friday to take on Meigs.
