South volleyball competes in tri at Huntington

HUNTINGTON — Elizabeth Bohren had seen enough.

The Huntington High volleyball standout was tired of Boyd County hanging around Tuesday and did something about it.

With the Highlanders leading 10-7 in the third set, Bohren scored four of the Highlanders’ next five points for a 15-13 victory in Lucas-Archer Gym.

“I think we played our very hardest,” Bohren said.

Bohren, a sophomore, came up big when it counted. She bounced a shot off a Lions’ defender for a point, smashed a shot to the middle of the court, then another to the back right corner. Bohren’s block gave Huntington High a 14-13 lead. Boyd County then hit a shot long to give the Highlanders the 26-24, 22-25, 15-13 victory.

“This one was a team effort,” Huntington High coach Chana Dixon said.

A team effort twice. The Highlanders opened the tri-match with a 25-14, 25-11 triumph over Parkersburg South. Huntington High opened a 10-point lead in the first set and cruised to a win. The second set was tighter. South tied it 11-11 before Calisia Mielcarek made a kill at the net to spark a 14-0 run.

“Ava (Garrett), our libero, her serves, she pulled that out pretty big,” Dixon said.

Garrett made three aces in the final six points as the Highlanders pulled away.

The Patriots (9-9) came back strong against Boyd County, winning 25-19, 19-25, 15-6.

South took advantage of a series of Lions’ unforced errors in the third set. The Patriots led 6-5 after a cross-court shot by Sky Hays. Boyd County (7-9) then sailed three shots out of bounds and one into the net before Hays made an ace and a kill to make it 12-5. The Lions then committed a net serve, a shot out of bounds and a net hit to end it.

South coach Emily Tracewell said she was pleased with how her team performed in the absence of senior star Payton Mackey, who sprained her ankle Monday and was in a walking boot Tuesday.

“Today was a pretty sad day with that out there,” Tracewell said of Mackey’s injury. “We struggled against Huntington. I think we could’ve done more if we played to our potential. We wanted to end the day with a win against Boyd and I’m glad we were able to do that.”

Lakin Thompson-Moore, a sophomore, said the Highlanders were motivated.

“We wanted it,” Thompson-Moore said. “So, we took it.”
