Kinzyn Lutchmansingh throws 7 TD passes as South routs Hurricane, 49-21
HURRICANE — Although Hurricane’s first football win of the season came last week, it was unable to ride that momentum to its second victory on Friday night.
Parkersburg South scored five first-half touchdowns and rolled to a 49-21 win at Hurricane.
The Patriots (2-4) used screen passes from QB Kinzyn Lutchmansingh to put the ball into the hands of skill players Channing Barrett and Taj Joyce, who took advantage of poor Hurricane tackling.
“At the end of the day, we didn’t tackle,” Hatfield said. “That’s been a huge problem for us all year. We’ve been around the football, but kids got to make the tackles.”
South earned a 41-14 win over John Marshall last Friday that gave the Patriots their first win of the season. Like Hatfield, South coach Larry Thompson is also in his first year.
The Patriots coach said that he thinks South has turned a corner following its second consecutive win but puts confidence on the line again with a game against Morgantown next Friday.
“I think they’re starting to play for one another,” said Thompson of whether South has turned a corner. “They’re playing for the team on the front of the chest and not the name on the back. We have a lot of talent on this team and it’s starting to come together.”
After a fumble on the Patriots’ opening drive that was recovered by Hurricane, South scored on each of its next four possessions, finding the end zone twice in the first quarter and three times in the second.
Lutchmansingh completed 12 of 15 passes for 429 yards and finished with seven TD passes. Barrett caught three passes from Lutchmansingh for 141 yards — each of them resulting in a TD. Joyce had three catches for 95 yards and two scores.
Lutchmansingh found 6-5, 200-pound senior Joyce on a screen in front of the Hurricane bench. The senior streaked, barely touched, to the end zone for 65 yards and the game’s first score.
Following a 48-yard screen pass from Lutchmansingh to receiver Logan Graham that went for a TD, Joyce hauled in a pass downfield over a Hurricane defender and sprinted the rest of the way for an 80-yard touchdown.
That one came in the second quarter and was followed by a pair of scores to slot receiver Channing Barrett – one for 54 yards and another for 27 – that completed the Patriots’ scoring in the first half.
Leading 34-7 at halftime, Barrett caught a 60-yard downfield pass in the third quarter from Lutchmansingh for that duo’s third touchdown. A two-point conversion made it 42-7.
“He played awesome tonight,” Thompson said. “He put the ball wherever we needed it. He was a leader across the board, and he executed at a very high level. We just wanted to build a rhythm with him early and build his confidence up, so when we did call those down-the-field shots, he stood back there with confidence and put the ball where he needed to.”
Hurricane (1-6) produced two of the next three scores. Zach Turner scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and quarterback Isaiah Kutscher’s 8-yard scamper set the final margin.
Kutscher finished the game with 10 carries for 86 yards and a TD to lead the Hurricane offense. One of his passes, though, was intercepted in the end zone on the opening drive of the game.
